dh is irish and would like an irish name.fine by me,but think oisin sounds a little harsh.we already have a fin and poppy and very irish surname!

i would like it to be quite unusual...my name is really common and there were 4 in my class, always hated that!
any ideas?

I like both names!

ISawTortoiseFuckingSantaClaus · 19/12/2009 08:51

Not sure how Oisin is pronounced but i LOVE Xavier.

purepurple · 19/12/2009 08:52

your surname isn't sauce is it though?
I prefer Xavier to Oisin

skidoodle · 19/12/2009 08:56

I love Oisin - beautiful name

Ondine · 19/12/2009 09:38

I don't think Oisin sounds harsh, gentle if anything. It is a beautiful name.

I prefer it to Xavier if your son is half Irish - more fitting.

motherbeyond · 19/12/2009 10:02

oisin is pronounced osh-een...no our surname is gallagher!
dh says no way to xavier, but i love it..we live in an area where oisin could be said in a number of ways,we are kind of in the middle.i always hated the way some people pronounced my name..think cilla black!
fern was on my list for a girl but has been discounted because of the numerous ways is could be said, none of them sounding very pretty!
thats why i think oisin could sound harsh.im sorted for girls,it's either hope or phoebe.but for boys? am stumped!

I love Oisin. My friend has one and it's pronounced, where they are in s Wales, Osh-an.

My DD would have been Atticus had she been a boy - that's fairly unusual.

Congratulations by the way. How long to go?

jellybeans · 19/12/2009 11:24

oisin is lovely but really don't like Xavier. I love Hope for a girl.

How about Joel, Niall, Micah, Caleb or Hayden?

motherbeyond · 19/12/2009 12:44

thanks very much timelord! i have 18 weeks to go.i do love hope as well, but think i prefer phoebe elizabeth,dh has vetoed elizabeth as too english though.
oisin growing on me i think, but my mum doesn't like it,and that puts me off. i do like caleb, how do you pronounce micah?like the pop star? went to school with a pratty hayden,so thats a no!

Xavier Gallagher has too many -er sounds at the ends. Oisin (pr. usheen) goes much better, imo. Kieran or Ciaran, Kian or Cian, Killian or Cillian (the C spelling is Irish) might go well with Gallagher?

Sazisi · 19/12/2009 23:10

What about Odhran (pronounced, and sometimes spelled Oran)? It's softer than Oisín, and would go nicely with pother names

Sazisi · 19/12/2009 23:11

pother? other

SaintNickKnack · 19/12/2009 23:14

I love Oisin, but I'm not fussed on Xavier. My 2 favourites would be Cillian or Callum.
I quite like Oscar too.

mathanxiety · 19/12/2009 23:15

Nice one, Sazisi.

There's also Aran (like the islands).

Xavielli · 19/12/2009 23:22

Love Xavier (Have one) but really don't think it would go with an Irish surname.

Cillian, Naill and Callum are lovely.

elliephant · 19/12/2009 23:45

Know a few Oran's - sounds nice. How about Lorcan, Donal, Diarmuid, Daragh, Jarlath, Naoise or Senan .

motherbeyond · 20/12/2009 08:14

thank you ladies...all except oisin have been rejected by dh.just asked lids 3 and 22 months if they liked oisin or xavier...one said daisy aand the other said roisin!!! helpful..noooot!

what about Orion? Always reminds me of stars.

Skegness · 20/12/2009 08:41

Xavier pretty awful, imo. Anything here? Bit confused as to how an Irish name fits in with Fin and Poppy though!

motherbeyond · 20/12/2009 10:41

fin is irish! i got away with poppy, but i've loved it since i was a child and met a beautiful african girl called poppy.he couldn't deny me!his family weren't happy though, they thought i'd picked it because i'm english and it was a reference to rememberence day...which obviously they do not acknowledge
not keen on orion, and can't see anything on the list skegness but thanks for that.sooooo difficult to pick a name you'll love for life.
i wanted ethan all the way through the last pregnancy, changed my mind at the last minute and am SO eternally glad i did!

Allets · 21/12/2009 03:05

My DS is Caelan, shortened to Cael (Kell).

Pronounced (Keh-linn).

mathanxiety · 21/12/2009 03:21

This is more of a girl's name (short version of Caoilfhionn)? Or is it the Welsh name Kellan?

motherbeyond · 21/12/2009 08:01
