What do people think of Eloise?

Hi,
I've been thinking of some girl's names to go with a Thomas and really like Eloise - but having looked it up on the web I think it may be a little old-fashioned?
What are people's opinions?
Thanks

Like it, esp with Lou as a nn. Prefer Elodie though!

LittleMontyontheDustyRoad · 17/12/2009 18:14

Eloise would have been my choice but exh didn't agree.

So I gave her two names, the first begins with El and the second ends in ise so she could call herself Eloise when she was older.

Unfortunately she hasn't done so... yet.

MrsMattie · 17/12/2009 18:15

It's nice, but I much prefer Louisa.

pranma · 17/12/2009 21:34

My cousin is Eloise and I think it is so pretty.

CuppaTeaJanice · 18/12/2009 15:05

It's my second favourite girls name.

I prefer Lois as a shortened version, rather than the overpopular Ellie.

ellokitty · 18/12/2009 18:50

My DD is Eloise, and she is the only one at her school. I like it because it is unusual, but not too off the wall.

The main reason I like the name is because there is no 'Eloise' type! I think the name has a modern feel, yet dates back to the 14th Century. There was an Eloise on the Titanic, I have taught a few Eloises (who would now be in their teens and early twenties), and of course it remains just outside the top 100 (and has never gone higher than the top 90 since 1998).

Not only that, but it is also in many ways, classless. Unlike the previous poster - Eloise is not a chav name, unless of course royalty counts as chavs . Representing the posh end -there's Lady Eloise Anson, Countess Eloise (granddaughter of the Queen of the Netherlands) and Eloise Taylor, daughter of Lady Helen Taylor, but then again you get the ordinary Eloises too. I've read people on here describing the name both as common, but also as posh!

As I said, one of the great appeals of the name to me is that as a name, it is like Katherine or Elizabeth (albeit less popular), in that when you hear the name, you cannot assume the type of person you are going to meet!

lovechoc · 18/12/2009 18:54

this is the only girls name DH and I agreed on last time (but we had a boy instead!) so if this next one is a girl I would imagine Eloise will be top of the list.

Nice choice.

lovechoc · 18/12/2009 18:57

LOL @ the chav comment from a previous poster. because ofcourse Eloise is right up there with Sophie or Emma or any other 'popular' name right enough...

doubleexpresso · 19/12/2009 17:18

ellokitty - I'm not denying this names' regal / or posh connections, all I'm saying is where I live now it's becoming a bit of a chav name. People who choose Emma and Sophie certianly don't choose Eloise, because it appears to be a different type of name. Not my rules, just reporting what I see ...

lovechoc · 19/12/2009 18:23

I would say Sophie is common as muck as a name, I know too many now who have named their daughter this where I live. Perhaps you are right, it depends where you live in the country.

PlonkerTeatowelOnTheirHeads · 19/12/2009 18:35

I think it's a fab name.

I only know one and she's a lovely 10yo who goes by the nn Ella.

Beautiful

GhoulsAreLoud · 19/12/2009 18:54

This is the name I want if DC2 is a girl.

DH says no because he went to school with one he didn't like. Grrr.

Bexybear · 19/12/2009 19:55

Me too re The damned on TOTP! love the name Eloise, it goes great with Thomas and I only know one.

Also love Louisa though havnt admitted it to anyone as thought it was a bit 70s...!

and Elsie and Elsa and Esme... sorry going off message here!

Jenbot · 20/12/2009 12:51

It is nice, but there are so many Ellies and Ellas and Elsies and Lilas and Lilys around.

Too many Es and Ls at the moment I fear.

MaggieAnFiaRua · 20/12/2009 22:04

chop off the first and last letters and you have Lois! i prefer that.

Louisa is lovely though, and Eloise is nice too. just prefer Louisa

LittleSilver · 22/12/2009 20:53

It's a lovely name, but I would say that as is name of DD1.

BUT am very strict about it not being abbreviated to "Ellie". I hate that. Also, have you considered the umlaut issue?

MrsMorgan · 22/12/2009 20:57

I also love it. It is dd2's middle name, and I so wish i'd stood my ground against xp and had it as her first name.

Also love Elodie.

mummyloveslucy · 22/12/2009 21:21

I think it's lovely, and goes well with Thomas too.

nappyaddict · 28/12/2009 12:48

It's actually quite popular near me. Names with a similar feel could be:

Heloise, Eloisia, Elodie, Ilona, Louisa, Luisa, Ophira, Ophelia or Aurora?

Gargula · 28/12/2009 19:21

Thanks for all your feedback.
I still really like the name and have decided that (assuming we have a girl - sonographer wasn't too sure) we'll probably choose Eloise with the "option" of shortening it to Ella. Our extended family already has an Ellie and it REALLY wouldn't go with our surname.
I don't know any other Eloises so don't know if its becoming really common here or not. But having said that according to another thread on here Thomas is the new Wayne - so at least they'll be chavvy together!

Really like Eloise.

Eloise73 · 28/12/2009 21:26

I like the name . I have never really been called Ellie which I would have hated anyway, a couple of people tried when I was younger and I nipped that in the bud! My close friends and family do call me El though which I don't mind.

I've always loved my name, its unusual, I have always had lovely comments about it - still do in fact

I think Eloise and Thomas go very well, good luck!

andirobobo · 28/12/2009 22:10

I like the name - we also have a Thomas and our DD is an Ellie with a middle name of Louise!
