so, friend is due at end of May. currently discussing names. She doesn't know the sex.

Alizarin/Alazarin for a boy? is apparently the name of a gorgeous blue colour.

no - reminds me of wolverine

harimosmummy · 16/12/2009 14:26

It sounds like some sort of medication to me. Sorry.

badietbuddy · 16/12/2009 14:27

Sounds like a diet pill

TisTheSeasonToBeHully · 16/12/2009 14:31

In my watercolour box it says Alizarin Crimson, which is a lovely transparent red.
We also have Caeruleum Blue, which I would call Turquoise.
Most of the other colours don't sound that nice, for example Burnt Umber, Sap Green, Yellow Ochre.

skybluewinking · 16/12/2009 14:33

Also a character in a Jilly Cooper novel!

charlotteolivia · 16/12/2009 14:42

yes choccy, it is used in red dye, but in blue paint as well. ooh er. which one sky??

Alizarin is usually associated with red dyes - it is a red chemical compound from the root of the madder plant. Can also be used in making blues. The word derives from the Arabic for juice.

sweetnitanitro · 16/12/2009 17:24

Agree with Harimosmummy and badietbuddy, it sounds like a type of drug.

MamaLazarou · 16/12/2009 17:31

It is a very silly name.

jabberwocky · 16/12/2009 17:32

Sounds like someone who teaches at Hogwarts.

BalloonSlayer · 16/12/2009 17:33

skyblue - I wondered where I had heard it before

I thought it was nice till then...

cece · 16/12/2009 17:36

It's awful. Sorry but you did ask!

Jojay · 16/12/2009 17:38

I love the sound of it but would never be brave enough to use it. And yes, there's a character in Jilly Coopers 'Pandora' called Alizarin.

natsmum100 · 16/12/2009 18:43
Hmm
MrsMattie · 16/12/2009 21:35

Sounds made up

PacificMistletoeandnoWine · 16/12/2009 21:40

Sounds like an antihistamine to me - not entirely sure why?!

How about "Aladar" - lovely not made up Hungarian boy's name. I know one; he is known as Ali.

PacificMistletoeandnoWine · 16/12/2009 21:46

Alimemazine - Vallergan

I was not just imagining it - big relief here, believe me !

So, it's a no from me, I am afraid.

LobstersLass · 16/12/2009 22:10

I like the name.
But Alizarin is most commonly associated with red, not blue.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 16/12/2009 22:13

Suggest to her Azure. (Still awful.)

Wattinger · 16/12/2009 22:44

He'll spend his whole life having to spell his name, don't do it!!!

nannynobnobs · 17/12/2009 12:41

Haha I immediately thought of Jilly Cooper too... Alizarin with his sister Sienna and brother Viridian! I'd steer clear myself but whatever floats your boat.

doubleexpresso · 17/12/2009 17:49

I read it as a female name ...
