Osian is lovely, I'd go for that.

We have a little boy called Osian Rhys Williams [born 8th Jan 2010] - pronounced Osh-an.

We both loved the name and were surprised by how many people could pronounce it correctly. The only person who struggled was my English sister - in - law, but I have now taught her to pronounce it correctly...

I love the meaning 'Little Deer' - so cute...

I know of 1 other Osian who is now 16, but don't know of anymore... I think even if it was a V popular name like Oliver or Finlay, I would still have used it. As long as you like the name, who cares how many others are called the same??

...now I need possible sibling names to go with Osian... quite like Iolo, but not sure if that's a bit too far out there...

our little boy (2 years) is called Osian (osh-an) where in wales and everyone loves it and i dont know any other baby boys called osian, but our friend who is 28 is called osian! we love it! he is called osian owen as we could not decide between the two!!

People seem to be forgetting there's an 'I' in the middle of the name...
I've never heard it pronounced osh-an by any welsh speakers, we've always pronounced it - Osh-yan (yan like the Germanic 'Jan').

BelleEnd · 03/02/2012 13:27

I am Welsh 1st language and I would pronounce it Osh-an, as would all my friends. "si" in Welsh often means a "sh" sound- Sian is pr. Shan, Sioned is Shoned etc etc. It's a brilliant name and v.v. popular at the mo.

I like Finlay best.

There are quite a few Osians here (N.Wales), but equally a few Finleys/Finlays and Olivers.
The ones I know seem to be pronounced Ossyan rather than Oshun though, it's the harsh 'yan' sound I don't like.

People also seem to be forgetting that this thread is from 2009!

suburbandream · 03/02/2012 14:09

Well spotted LaFille! I wonder if winjy is still around and if the baby ended up being called Osian? Smile DH is Welsh and there are some beautiful welsh names.

Celticmummy · 03/02/2012 14:48

Sorry, that was my fault! Was looking at Osian and stumbled across the earlier thread - only realised afterwards it was from years ago!

Re: Notso - The ones I know are Ossyan too...I truly had never heard the other way. Learning curve!
