Is the name 'Jules', as a full name, for a boy, way too girly to be used in the UK?

Only to be used as a shortened version of Julian in my opinion.

Wags · 06/12/2009 15:06

Have a friend with a Jools, not shortened from anything. Lovely name IMO.

roisin · 06/12/2009 15:06

Yes, way too girly.
It would be fine to name him Julian, and call him Jules as long as parents/he are happy with it.

Wags · 06/12/2009 15:09

See I don't think of it being girly at all, especially with the spelling. Very Jools Holland

Mongolia · 06/12/2009 15:10

I know one, very boyish and not feminine at all

mumoftoomany · 06/12/2009 15:31

I know a 5 year old Jules - I like it!

Jools (Jools Holland) and Jules sound very masculine to me.

JingleAllTheWay · 06/12/2009 15:34

Know two - one adult, one small aged 3.. Nice, but somehow a nn innit?

crumpette · 07/12/2009 14:17

'Tis indeed somehow a nn, but I don't really like Julian.. or Julius..

there seems to be kind of a 50/50 split on if it's too girly / not a proper name or if it is OK

any more opinions would be gratefully received

How does it sounds with the surname? If it goes well, that may well tip the balance either way.

LuckyC · 09/12/2009 12:17

I wouldn't, personally, as it seems like not a proper name to me? But then I LOVE Julian, and have two very very cool friends called Julian who have been shortened to Jules since the day they were born.

Could you not accept one of the longer versions as the sort of birth certificate name and then just shorten it to Jules forever more? Or is that a cop-out?

Thanks for thoughts- see, I did really like Julian, had a reasonably mixed review on mn but then it was completely laughed at and destroyed by people in rl (why oh why did I mention names to anyone..!) also DP realised Julian Clary would be a namesake...

back to the drawing board!!!

What about Julio (pronounced wth a j not as in "Hoolio" Spanish style)

goingforitagain · 17/12/2009 13:45

I think its very camp.
went out with a very hot guy years ago called julian. nothing feminine about him believe me but couldn't stand his name. thought it never suited him.

MamaLazarou · 17/12/2009 13:54

Love it as a nickname, but not as a name in its own right.

Julian Clary though... cor!

AliBellandthe40jingles · 18/12/2009 00:07

I love the name Julian shortened to Jules for a boy - but you can't just call a boy Jules I don't think, doesn't sound right.

stillenacht · 18/12/2009 00:13

I like Jules for a boy. Very nice. A cute childs name but not sure for a grown man. I mean Jools Holland..hmm..

MaggieAnFiaRua · 18/12/2009 12:25

Well, i like it as a nick name for julian or even, if you have the nerve, Julius. I love the name Julius. But I didn't know if my son would be a Julius.... His name is unusual, but with less of a boastful swagger about it iyswim.

Jules short for Julius is lovely imo. I know a four year old Julian too.

I wouldn't think of Julian Clary. And tbh, so what, he's funny. I think of Julian, Aaunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin!!!

crumpette · 18/12/2009 12:29

Thanks for comments I am pleased to say I have completely struck off 'Jules' as a stand alone name. I still love it as a nn though, but yeah not entirely sure about Julian or Julius.. I have a feeling poor baby will be nameless for a while, DP has recently announced the only name he loves is his own !!!
