What do you think of the name Ottilie for a girl? And is it popular at all?

Awful.

HohohoBumperlicious · 06/12/2009 09:52

I was totally loving the name until Ottilie Butterly

MrsSchadenfreude · 07/12/2009 11:49

She also gets called Oatibix.

ohdearwhathappened · 07/12/2009 11:53

like it

Ottilia is nice too

Cortina · 07/12/2009 12:56

Does anyone remember the wonderful 'Shiva's Pearls' it was serialised on Jackanory many moons ago!?

It's a brilliant book that features Ottilie, Mary, Temple. Set in Victorian England and Holland with some elements of the mystic East.....It's a very Christmassy read.

Can't remember who it was by but it's a great read and fab children's book.

MamaLazarou · 07/12/2009 15:25

Ooh, that's a new one on me... Ottilie... yes, I like it.

Not Ottilia, though. Ottilia the hun.

mathanxiety · 07/12/2009 15:26

Wouldn't work in Ireland at all, where the t tends to be very soft. I prefer Odile, Ophelia or Natalie.

higgle · 07/12/2009 16:37

This has brought back some memories - I chose Ottilie for DC 1 who was DS 1 so couldn't use it DS2 was supposed to be Miranda, I'm saving the names for dogs now, think they might suit the 2 dachshunds I will get if I ever retire!

sparklyrainbow · 07/12/2009 22:06

Love it but OH also thinks I made it up and says it reminds him of otters I have given it to the dog as a middle name instead now!

persephoneplum · 08/12/2009 12:40

I love it, but only on a French-speaking kid. Australian pronunciation totally butchers it. sigh

minkeymonkeymoo · 08/12/2009 12:58

I like it - but did think 'Ottilie Butterly' too

mollythetortoise · 09/12/2009 13:19

i like alot too but have noticed it more and more - same ilk as Romilly, Cecily etc which I also really like.

The only thing that puts me off is that it i think it WILL get more common in the next 5 years or so - like martha is now (another name I love).

My imaginary dd2 is possibly an emmeline or a celia.

Tryharder · 09/12/2009 13:26

I knew an elderly German lady called Ottilie - pronounced O-tee-leah. Thought it was a beautiful name. She was called Otti for short. It's very old fashioned and unusual -mm, am now considering it should DC3 turn out to be a girl...

MrsMattie · 09/12/2009 13:31

Very pretty, but agree with molly - it's bound to become more common. Look at Amelie.

mollythetortoise · 09/12/2009 13:41

i think if you want to stay ahead of the curve with names you have to start considering the names of our mothers NOT our grandmothers!

So Sheila, Margaret, Anne, Catherine, Eileen, Susan, Barbara etc

They'll be the fashionable names in 10-20 years time!!

OtterInaSkoda · 11/12/2009 14:07

Is it really spelt Ottilie? It doesn't look right to me, although I can't work out why. Perhaps I'm thinking of Ottoline.
at Ottilia the Hun!

OtterInaSkoda · 11/12/2009 14:11

Ah. I was thinking of this.

harimosmummy · 11/12/2009 14:11

Lovely, lovely name. I know one and she is a gorgeous girl.

mrsshackleton · 11/12/2009 14:26

I know two little ones, it is definitely getting more fashionable

But if you like it don't let that put you off. Imo it's impossible to escape the zeitgeist on names

Ineedsomesleep · 12/12/2009 09:15

It isn't popular here in the North West. I've never heard of a single one.

Really like it, also like Ottoline.

Phatcat, surely that's not a bad association?

mollythetortoise, totally agree. If you want to have a name for your DD that no other child she meets will have, try my Mum's name - Thelma.

JosieL67 · 25/01/2010 22:57

I have an Ottilie an she's Ottie or Otts for short. Love the name - so pleased we decided to go with it.

LittlePushka · 25/01/2010 23:04

Loveley! Just gorgeous and unusual.!

serinBrightside · 27/01/2010 22:32

I think that I needmoresleep lives in a different part of the North West to me!

I have one friend called Ottille and know of two little ones.

I love it.

icarriedawatermelon2 · 27/01/2010 22:34

A lovely friend of mine has just named her daughter Ottilie, the first I have heard of.
