My partner is half French so we are considering using a French name or possibly a French mn. I found this on another site and think it is really pretty.
Would be pn Meer-ay.
What do you think?

i went to school with a mirelle (although pronounced mir-elle), and thought it a really pretty name. go for it!

bellissima · 04/12/2009 14:29

I always confuse it with jam - and yes I know thats myrtles or mirabelles or whatever but I see mireille and think of a bonne maman jam jar...

Squishabelle · 04/12/2009 14:33

Immediately made me think of Mielle vaccuum cleaners.

AvadaKedavra · 04/12/2009 14:40

Is DD middle name. I don't have any connection to France, just think it is really pretty.

No one pronouces it correcty btw - always Mi-relle which may get v. annoying if it's a first name.

MitchyInge · 04/12/2009 16:02

makes me think of mille-feuille (sp?)

CAKEY things

yum

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 04/12/2009 16:05

Isn't it the name of a coil?

doodledaffyduck · 04/12/2009 16:44

I'm sure the correct French pn is Meer-ay but I can see how people might esily think it was Meer- elle!
I think the coil is Mirena wildthings!!

Sounds like a brand of The Pill....

TheBossofMe · 04/12/2009 17:13

It was my friend's Mum's name when I was little - I loved it and always thought it was impossibly glamorous and chi-chi.

doodledaffyduck · 04/12/2009 20:34

Thebossofme- I love your name!

TheBossofMe · 04/12/2009 21:07

Why thank you! It was one of my favourite sayings to my Mum when I was a very stroppy teenager "You are not the boss of me". Whereas now my most used phrase is "Mum, what should I do?". Still, I like to think I'm in control of my own life. Maybe not in control of my own wardrobe - DD likes to pick my outfits in the morning (I mostly ignore her choices, but sometimes they are inspired!).

xx

My sister's MIL is Mireille (she is French) and she pronounces it "Mee-ray". It think it is French for Blueberry or Bilberry - that is certainly my sister's nn for her !

doodledaffyduck · 04/12/2009 23:27

I like it because my son says this to me (he is only little, no where near teenage years)! It reminded me of him!
bikeski- I think Mireille means 'admired'. I thought blueberry was something like myrtille.

Ah! BikeRunSki - so maybe I have seen it written on a jam jar!!

GrendelsMum · 05/12/2009 16:37

It's a french clapping song, isn't it? I remember doing it when I was an au pair in France.

It starts 'Mireille, Mireille l'abeille'

I think it's lovely.

Bonsoir · 05/12/2009 16:42

The most famous Mireille

Millarkie · 05/12/2009 16:48

I knew one pronounced Mee-ray. I think it looks so pretty written but not so nice spoken.

skihorse · 05/12/2009 18:28

You'll never get an anglophone to pronounce it correctly.
