My brother (late 40s) is Ambrose and I love it! It is actually his middle name, but chose to use it rather than his first name when he was about 20.

Biscuit
SomeGuy · 02/12/2009 19:27

How about Frodo? Or Nardwuar?

controlfuckingfreaky · 02/12/2009 20:26

iguana
narwal
marlin
meerkat...

or have you considered soduku?

MamaLazarou · 02/12/2009 20:43

Ambrose is lovely. DH likes Algernon, but I think the nickname Algie sounds like something sea-creatures eat.

SomeGuy · 02/12/2009 22:40

Alpen?

Quattrocento · 02/12/2009 22:44

You may laugh but I actually know a Peregrin (Perry) as well as two Persephones (Seffy and Percy) and an Algernon (thankfully Al).

controlfuckingfreaky · 02/12/2009 23:27

laugh? more like weep!

mumoftoomany · 03/12/2009 09:45

I too know a Peregrine, known as Perry. Is it really so bad?

mistletoemulledwinemoodlum · 03/12/2009 09:47

You should only call your child Peregrine if you wish him to be called Penguin for the first part of his school days.

DS has a Peregrine in his class, and he is universally known as Penguin, i don't think ds would even know who peregrine was if I asked him.

MintyCandyCane · 03/12/2009 09:50

I prefer Earnest to Algernon personally. Not keen on the other two either.

bellissima · 03/12/2009 10:13

Mephistopheles. Meppy for short.

MintyCandyCane · 03/12/2009 10:20

Meppy ....he he

Hullygully · 03/12/2009 10:57

I love Greek names. We spend a LOT of time there and we have friends called Sophocles, Pericles, Aristotle, Adonis etc. Marvellous.

serinBrightside · 05/12/2009 21:21

Nowt wrong with Ambrose.

lumpasmelly · 08/12/2009 14:05

If you are positive that your son is going to be (a) incredibly handsome (b) athletically built (c)rich and (d) posh, then he could carry any of these names with aplomb. If in doubt of any of the above (apart from perhaps (c) which he could do without providing he is very artistic) best to stick with Ambrose......

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 08/12/2009 14:08

how about adding Aldous to the list of possibles?

Rafi · 08/12/2009 14:10

Augustus?

Hullygully · 08/12/2009 14:13

Nigel?

Rafi · 08/12/2009 14:20

My brother used to have a friend called Nigel who ate grass.

Does anyone else feel like they've walked into a P G Wodehouse novel?

Hullygully · 08/12/2009 14:23

It's obligatory to eat grass if you're a Nigel.

What ho.

MrsMerryHenry · 08/12/2009 22:56

mummyoftoomany: "I too know a Peregrine, known as Perry. Is it really so bad?" - short answer: YES!

Rafi - PG Wodehouse? Don't know what you mean

Love Augustus and Aldous. Maybe we could use those as middle names...

Also Waldemar is a goodie (mmm...there's music in the name Waldemar), or maybe Wolfgang.

I could always make up a name to make sure my DS is truly original: something vaguely African sounding (to go with my roots), say:

Prince Peregrine Augustus Brrrmpopoehgelegelegele Electrolux Sympathy Nigel

Oooh, can't wait for the christening!
