I think I really love this name. Possibly with Buttercup as a middle name (altho that could be the pg hormones making me into a loon).

MN jury?

Betty lovely, Buttercup awful.

muminthemiddle · 04/12/2009 23:44

How about Buttercup Betty?
I think it does have a certain ring to it.
She will definately not be one of 6 in her class and everyone will know who she is without ever having to say her last name. Does your last name begin with a B too?- that would sound fab with another B as in Buttercup Betty Blythwaite.

Thanks for your comments. I am rather partial to the bovine names... Clover and Flora are both on my long-list

Not sure I buy the idea of having to have the full name and not the shortened version. Think there are enough examples of short versions existing as names in their own right.

I suppose I think if you're going to have a middle name you might as well have something brilliant and interesting - not sure of the point of them otherwise (have just started new thread about middle names - maybe there's something I'm missing )

I love Betty... I'm preggers with 3rd daughter and considering Beti... but short for Betsan as we are welsh!!!! Already have 2 daughters Tesni and Nia- so hard!!!! Feel like I've rejected all the names under the sun for the first two...poor number 3!!!!!

Not too sure of butterrcup... but if you love it why the devil not?!

TheFallenMadonna · 09/12/2009 22:19

I like Betty. I love Bess (and call DD this as a nn).

ChaosInCamelot · 09/12/2009 22:28

Really like it. Don't think you should have to give full version if you don't want to. One of my dc's has a 'shortened' name but I don't like the long 'proper' name so would never have used it in full. Her name is just the short version.
Wouldn't use buttercup though, even though it sounds sweet. Would keep that as a nickname.

ChaosInCamelot · 09/12/2009 22:30

Prizeelliott- am welsh speaker too and like Beti spelt that way as well. Nice pet name for Betsan.

LaDiDaDi · 09/12/2009 22:31

I like it.

CarmenSanDiego · 09/12/2009 22:40

Nothing wrong with using a shortened name as a full name. I did it with my son because the longer version has become more popular as a girl's name now, and it's fine.

Betty Buttercup is fine if you're a bit eccentric, a celeb, live in a posh area... It might get a few looks in a more down to earth area.

But if you like it, go for it. She'll carry it off if she wants to, and if she doesn't, she doesn't have to tell anyone her middle name!

doodledrawers · 10/12/2009 11:46

To add to the full vs shortened name debate....My mum's name is Betty, not Elizabeth, and she's spent her entire life describing herself as "just Betty", as people assume it's short for Elizabeth. Not sure that's been great for her self esteem . I'm almost universally known by the shortened version of my name, but Mum made sure I'd got the option of the longer version if I ever wanted to use it!!

WinkyWinkola · 10/12/2009 13:10

I love Betty. I think it's such a great name.

Babette is also a v. good 'proper' name. Am tempted by it should I ever have another daughter) but as I've not French connection (so to speak), I wonder if it would be a bit pretentious.

Buttercup is silly. It'll make her sound like a farmyard animal character out of a storybook.

MirandaAnn · 10/12/2009 13:36

Hi!
My daughter is named Bethany, but we call her Betty - it just became habit! And everybody says 'Oh what a lovely name!' I think it's really sweet and traditional.

mathanxiety · 10/12/2009 16:59

Like Betty, and also Bette. Buttercup, not so keen....

pacinofan · 10/12/2009 23:20

Love Betty, our dd is Verity and is often abbreviated to Betty (dd1 called her 'Berity' on her arrival and it went from there!)

Nice and unusual!

MrsMattie · 11/12/2009 18:50

My DD is nicknamed Betsy or sometimes just Bet. Betty is cool!
