What do you think of Sandy (short for Alexander) for a boy?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Are you a Scot or living in Scotland? If yes, it's fine.

nooka · 02/12/2009 06:46

My sister's godfather is called Sandy (short for Alexander). Seems a perfectly OK choice, although he doesn't use it formally (he's an academic). I don't think he is Scottish. If you choose Alexander then if Sandy doesn't seem right at any point there are plenty of alternatives

AdoraBelleDearHeart · 02/12/2009 07:00

Short for Alexander it's fine. I wouldn't give Sandy on it's own to a boy.

Buda · 02/12/2009 07:06

I know one. I think it is officially short for Alexander but he is only ever know as Sandy. He is about 15 I think.

thumbwitch · 02/12/2009 07:09

It's fine when short for Alexander, if boy in qu has reddish hair or is Scottish. I like it. I know an osteopath called Sandy - I think he is both of Scottish origin and has reddish hair.

mumoftoomany · 02/12/2009 10:46

To my ears, it is short for Sandra.

GibberingGinger · 02/12/2009 10:52

I love it. I know two or three and they are all men. But I'm scottish. My husband who is english (but living in scotland) completely thinks its a girls name and refuses to even contemplate it.

zozzle · 02/12/2009 13:53

Not convinced.

doubleexpresso · 02/12/2009 13:58

I do like it, but agree with everyone about needing a Scottish link to carry it off. Think people will be a bit about it.

Bettymum · 02/12/2009 16:15

I love it. Reminds me of a particularly gorgeous ex-boyfriend . But yes I do think you need to be Scottish to use it as a boy's name.

Acanthus · 02/12/2009 16:35

Only if you're Scottish and preferably in Scotland

NancyDrewRocks · 02/12/2009 17:16

A bit too "Grease" for my liking. sorry.

bellissima · 02/12/2009 18:35

Agree everyone. Fine if you are Scottish (and somehow rather manly if you are Scottish - or maybe that's just my hunk in kilt fantasy), but if not its Sandy can't you see I'm in misery etc

Vivia · 02/12/2009 21:55

Nooka, just wondered why you pointed out 'he's an academic'. My very good friend is a Professor in his sixties called Sandy who never uses his full name, Alexander. I think it's a lovely name, especially here in Scotland.

nooka · 03/12/2009 06:11

Well I was going to say that he wrote books (about suicide in the Middle Ages) and then thought that was a bit superfluous. I don't like diminutives given as formal names, so I guess I was just saying that CracklinRosie shouldn't put Sandy on the birth certificate.

Funny I hadn't even thought of the Grease connection, but I can't see that being an issue for a child born now. Sandra to me is a real 70s/80s name, so I don't see it being in wide use for another couple of decades.

MaggieNollaig · 03/12/2009 08:35

I really like that! makes a chance from Alex. Zander is ok, but pretensh or a bit try-hard, but Sandy is really cool.

sunshiney · 03/12/2009 08:45

I Love it, going to run it by dh for dc2! Not having Scottish connection wouldn't matter to me.

Would need a very cool little boy to carry it off though!

MaggieNollaig · 03/12/2009 08:49

personally, i find it far less girly than Sasha, which is accepted as a nn for Alex. I'd never call a boy Sasha, I don't dislike it. I just think it's pretty

I don't think Sandy is pretty at all, I'd never call a girl Sandy. (no offence to girl sandys!)

btw, I'm not scottish, and I still love it.
