How do you pronounce Cressida?

This is on a friend's list.

We've been having a bit of a disagreement about the pronunciation.
I'd say Cress-i (as in lid/hid) -da. She says it is Cress-ee-da.

Which of us is right?

I would say it as your friend would , Cress-ee-da. No idea which is the correct pronunciation though.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 29/11/2009 13:41

Cress-ee-da is how I would say it. But I don't actually know anyone with that name. I must have heard it pronounced like that on the television.

DuelingFanjo · 29/11/2009 13:41

Cress-eeee-da

hocuspontas · 29/11/2009 13:45

Cressid-a

Only because our Eng Lit teacher pronounced it like in 'Troilus and Cressida'. She could be wrong though!

Definitely as in lid/hid, and as in "Troilus and Cressida"

DaftApeth · 29/11/2009 13:53

The Cressida I know pronounces it:

Cre - sid- uh

overweightoptimist · 29/11/2009 13:55

Toyota Cress-i-da

IMO not a nice name (for a car or a girl) as it is for an inconstant woman: see Wikipedia

MintyCane · 29/11/2009 13:55

definitly id as in hid I know three of them.

MamaLazarou · 29/11/2009 14:05

Yes, Cress-id-a, not Cress-ee-da.

MilkNoBrandyForSanta · 30/11/2009 07:59

Theres a road near me called cressida and its prnounced Cress-ee-da

But then that is a road not a baby

ellipsis · 30/11/2009 08:05

I one I knew pronounced it Cress-id-a

Tambajam · 30/11/2009 08:25

Definitely ID.
Troilus and Cressida is certainly not ee.

Buntytea · 30/11/2009 08:45

I would pronounce it ID too but maybe the confusion comes from the variant titles of the Troilus and Cressida story (Chaucer, Henryson, Shakespeare, etc) - eg Criseyde? It's spelt lots of different ways in different texts

Pingpong · 30/11/2009 19:02

like hocuspontas says

bronze · 30/11/2009 19:05

another cress-(h/l)-id-a

RnB · 30/11/2009 19:07

definitely ID. I rather like the name actually...

LadyCressida · 08/01/2010 09:42

It's my name and it's pronounced with the short i like in hid and lid! I find it very annoying when people call me cress-ee-da and worse cress-eye-da.

Don't have much problem with the references to being an inconstant woman as very few people have heard of the play, let alone know the plot!

Jux · 08/01/2010 09:51

Defo as in lid. I've never heard anyone say it otherwise, but obviously they do. (I've sung Troilus and Cressida many times, LadyCressida!)

SmacOnTheLipsUnderTheMistletoe · 08/01/2010 12:15

id as in lid

birdofthenorth · 08/01/2010 13:19

cress-id-da not cress-eee-da in my mind

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/01/2010 13:22

Definitely CRESS-i-dah.

Don't think she could call her baby it if she can't pronounce it.
