Rosa/Rosie

Baby is due in, erm, three days. I really like Rosa but if I use that, will everyone call her Rosie? Rosie is the name of a particularly foul member of our family, and a particularly insane dog which lives on our street, so I am keen to avoid it for those reasons, but most people I've asked seem to think it's inevitable... What do you think?

I don't think so, I think if you called her Rose (like my DD) she would be more likely to be called Rosie (like my DD). I've known 3 or 4 Rosas over the past 15yrs or so and none of them have been called Rosie - haven't known any Rosies, so it's not that their name was Rosa but they were called Rosie IYSWIM.

Rosa is beautiful - i would never think to change it to Rosie...seems like a totally different name to me

BlueChampagne · 27/11/2009 13:09

If I was introduced to a Rosa I wouldn't dream of calling her Rosie unless specifically asked.

loler · 27/11/2009 13:15

Love Rosa - would have liked to use it for dc2 but he was a boy!

I agree with the view that people follow your lead, if you never use Rosie then neither will anyone else.

Good luck xo

blondiep14 · 27/11/2009 13:31

I really love it and wouldn't use Rosie instead if I met one.
I do like Rosie too as know a lovely one but can't get past Rosie Webster!
Rosa is a totally different name, it would be like using Kerry instead of Kelly wouldn't it??
BTW it is on our girl shortlist too!

Flowerface · 27/11/2009 14:19

This is very encouraging. It is def. our favourite name. But when DP told his friend that we were thinking of Rosa, the friend misheard 'Rosie', and I thought 'this is going to happen a zillion times'. But maybe the friend is just deaf.

I've got a Rosa (she's lovely!) - her aunt occasionally calls her Rosie but no-one else. I've had to correct a few people who have heard it as Rosie over the last 2.5 years, but not many. I would (and did) go for it!

Anya4 · 27/11/2009 21:18

I wondered if that would happen with my Elsa (being called Elsie, which feels like a really different name, and not one that I would choose). Maybe a couple of times people have called her Elsie, usually because they are already familiar with another little one called that, but generally speaking she's called Elsa (apart from all the ridiculous nn we give her!).
Rosa is a lovely name, and a bit different from all the Rosies there are around at the mo. Go for it !

MrsMattie · 27/11/2009 21:24

I love both Rosa and Rosie. However, I wouldn't dream of calling a Rosa 'Rosie' unless she specifically told me that it was her nickname. It's like meeting an Elizabeth and calling her Lizzie. Quite rude!

muminthemiddle · 27/11/2009 22:01

My dd had a friend at nursery called Rosa and it always struck me as being a nice name.

GoddessInTheKitchen · 27/11/2009 22:05

rosa is nice and you can always drum it in to the child to correct people, my dn is called rosaria and no one has ever called her rosie because she wouldn't let them

ja9 · 27/11/2009 22:06
