Unusual surname, sensible first name?

My husband has a Turkish dad so we have the slightly unusual surname of Atakuru. Totally undecided as to whether we should try and come up with a sensible first name to counter balance the surname or go the whole hog and have an unusual first name! Any thoughts?

I'm thinking sensible first name with a bit of alliteration

Alice Atakuru, for example.

Maybe an international first name... e.g. Joseph (Josef), Thomas (Tomas) etc etc.

I've got an unusual surname that always needs spelling. Though my first name is reasonably common (Clare), because it's a different spelling to the most common form (Claire) I'm often needing to decide whether to make a fuss on the correct spelling of my first name or my surname. Seems a bit over the top to insist on both. So, I don't think it matters whether the first name is unusual or not, but try to chose something that is simple to spell!

But then again, it hasn't scared my life too bad ;) probably not worth worrying about too much!

Don't worry about it, just choose a name you like!

FWIW I love the turkish names Cem (boy) and Elif (girl). If you wanted a Turkish/English name, there was a thread on here a while ago... search 'turkish names' maybe

And I love your surname - sounds vaguely Japanese too (well, to me anyway )

Yes simple doesn't have to be boring.

I like Joy or Beth with your sur name.

I'd avoid anything that ends in A as the sounds will run. It'd would be hard enough to 'hear' make out the sur name anyway as it's foreign, wihtout adding confusion about where first name ends and where sur name starts iyswim.

eg Anna ATakuru. Did I hear Ann Natakuru? All I remember is anne (so they get the first name wrong As WELL!)
