I like Xavier as a name but when anybody asks his name nobody can repeat it back and nobody says that's nice! I'm now at the stage of avoiding striking up conversation or lying and saying his name is John to strangers! Have I made a mistake is it horrible and too pretentious and will Xavier have a horrible time his whole life? My other DS is Sebastian and I always get compliments.

Btw, I strongly believe in naming your child for the qualitites you want them to have. Xavier apparently means 'bright, splendid'. Great qualities for any child

I have a Xavier. I remember feeling when he was a baby that his name was a bit big for him. But then again I also felt like this with my Eliana. We call him Xav and Xavi informally.

It suits him down to the ground. He has dark hair and dark eyes (infact I'd go so far as to agree with MP that he is a handsome monster) and a greek surname. I was raised as a catholic so it's not such an unusual name to me.

To whoever said it's poncy if you aren't French - [raspberry]. A French Xavier could move to Dagenham, call his kids Charlene and Desmond and it won't make him any less worthy of the name. All this certain names for certain people is BS. Who knows where someones life will take them? And what the hell has your name got to do with that!?

Keep it.

I really like "Xavier". However we gave our little boy a Welsh name that hardly anyone (surprisingly in my view) seemed to be able to pronounce. I began to dread having to repeat it. One friend just said "Blimey!" when I told him the name. Whilst we wanted an unusual name we had never intended to saddle our son with something that would be a burden, so at 6 months we changed it on the birth certificate. I'm glad we did.

HopingForASunnyDay · 09/12/2009 19:39

Its a lovely name...stick with it!

I think a lot of people have made the point that it is an 'adult' name, very true.

There are loads of names in the top 100 that are so cute for a 5 year old, but will be ridiculous on a 45yo, ifswim?

I have an unusual name which I love, it is a conversation starter and has even got me a job in the past on the basis that people would remember me over the competition.

That said, I can't imagine a 6 month old 'Hoping'

EdgarAleNPie · 09/12/2009 19:42

it's a cool name. people are nobs. ignore them.

Ilovemybed · 12/12/2009 09:50

I was a bit like this with ds's name, I couldn't quite believe we'd chosen something so unusual. But I think after 6months they become a bit more of a person and 'own' their name. So keep the faith!

Xavier is a great name.

My brother is Xavier, It's a great name, super sophisticated and creative sounding. v.catholic as 1 poster has mentioned (but link is only really made in Europe)

Just make sure u know how you want to pronounce it as there are several different acceptable pronunciations.

eg Zay-viour, Za-vee-yay

Ivykaty44 · 14/12/2009 16:06

There is one on facebook - a mutal friend of mine is his friend...

don't worry

messylittlemonkey · 16/12/2009 13:26

I like it! Different without being weird!

If you like it, then don't worry what others think.

It's so nice to hear of another Xavier! Hope you didn't change it. We called our third son Xavier (in Aug '08) and I know what you mean about some people having no idea what you are saying but I do get alot of positive comments and many people love it! Hopefully it will get more popular.....

slushy06 · 18/06/2010 16:11

I love it it is what ds2 would be called if we have one . I think it is because it is more common than Sebastian. Ds name is fairly common no comments on it dd name is unusual and everyone comments (well 95% of people) the others change the subject.

Ineedsomesleep · 18/06/2010 20:19

Xavier will be about 8 months by now. Where do all these old threads keep popping up from?

MrsMcJnr · 18/06/2010 22:33

My Xavier is 2yrs5m we still think it is a great name and it really suits him, we get some odd pronunciations but most people have embraced it now enjoy your little x-man
