What's the verdict on Eric?

We're still short of boys names. DS is called Freddie and I thought Eric might be quite nice. Middle name will be Arthur.

Does it tick the nice, popular but not too popular box?

love it

OmniDroid · 16/11/2009 21:01

Eric Arthur Blair - George Orwell's name. So you'll get some strong associations with that choice!

doingthelambethwalk · 16/11/2009 21:02

Love it, know some little brothers Frank and Eric

wasabipeanut · 16/11/2009 21:03

Ooooooh I didn't know that. Someone made the point that Eric Arthur runs together too much and I am inclined to agree.

What do people think of Edmund and Gilbert?

Or Elliot? I like that too.

how about Wilfred, shotened to wilf?

midnightexpress · 16/11/2009 21:06

Edmund reminds me of the first Blackadder and also isn't the rather unpleasant sibling in the narnia books called Edmund? Gilbert sounds a bit wet to me, but I LOVE Bert as a NN.

dizzydixies · 16/11/2009 21:21

midnightexpress - how can Gilbert be wet - did you never love gilbert Blyth

Edmund & Elliot I like and Edwin too

Merle · 16/11/2009 21:54

I like Eric a lot. I like the fact that it is short and snappy. I also like the fact that it is used in quite a few European countries. I like most of the names suggested on this thread but none are as sharp as Eric. Don't be put off - use it!

Cobblers · 16/11/2009 22:02

Bloody love it.

Botbot · 16/11/2009 22:26

I think Eric is the next big thing. Honestly.

noonoo1966 · 16/11/2009 22:37

Just looking through some threads to read and this one jumped out at me, my husband's name is Eric!! When he announced his name to me the night we met (he has an unusual sirname too) I thought he was joking! It is a very unusual name and apparently he was named by his dad - I often pull his leg and say what was your dad thinking!! I too think of it as an old man's name and think of Eric Morecombe and Eric Sykes and a friend of mine had a cat called Eric!! Sorry although I love my hubbie dearly its a no no for a baby name!!!

fruitstick · 16/11/2009 22:40

I have a Fred and an Arthur

Both Eric and Ernest were also on my list and I love them both.

I've heard of a few Wilf's recently (although not if you already have a Fred) and a Stanley.

And my friend as a Humphrey who is adorable, and another has a Bert.

Servalan · 16/11/2009 22:43

Love, love love the name Eric! It's my absolute favourite boys name. Strong, snappy masculine, fab!

If I were to have a DS in future though I probably wouldn't be able to use it cos DH doesn't like it

My other faves are Gregory and Ewan (DH doesn't like those names either!!)

Lotster · 16/11/2009 22:48

Saw a very sweet, shaggy haired kid at the swimming pool called Eric.
I was struck by how much it suited him.

I chose a "vintage" name for my daughter and at first it was a marmite effect but mostly now it's just compliments.

F the naysayers!

motherlovebone · 16/11/2009 23:17

Fred and Eric?

anamaria22 · 17/11/2009 09:58

I love Eric. Strong, masculine and not too common. Go for it!

MaggiePie · 17/11/2009 10:08

I like it better with a K too.

I also like Victor, Donald, Bruce, Howie

(middle-aged man chic)

Botbot · 17/11/2009 13:38

Funny isn't it?

Eric = cool (IMO), whereas Derek = bleaugh.

Teapot13 · 17/11/2009 14:40

Probably not relevant to you, but having grown up in the United States, this strikes me as a very seventies name. There were probably 2 Erics in every class. It's surprising to me to see how MNers view it as a cool, old-fashioned name.

Lakota · 17/11/2009 14:43

How about Evan?

mathanxiety · 17/11/2009 19:29

Very nice name imo.

Sesi · 17/11/2009 20:31

I think it's cooler than a lot of the other old men names because of the Scandinavian connection.

Bit of Eric the Red Viking cred....

GinaandtheBean · 20/11/2009 14:51

My DH's beloved Grandfather is called Eric and he was v v keen on the name.

Had to veto it, I was at school with a lad called Erik Bloodaxe Cooper.

Aside from his unfortunate middle name he was nicknamed 'Erik the erection'.

Kids are charming

birdofthenorth · 20/11/2009 15:02

Sorry, not a fan. Seems dated rather than classic to me. Like Arthur more!

IrritatedMe · 20/11/2009 15:05

Oh dear - bloke in our class at school was an Eric.

He was nicknamed Mr Shin.

(and just to spell it out for you...that makes ericshin. say if fast...)
