Ted

Myself and DH CANNOT agree on a boys name, and given that I am currently 4 days overdue things are getting desperate!!

The one thing we do agree on is that we would like a name which can be shortened to whatever the child would like as they get older. We both like the name Ted, and the only formal versions of this I can think of are Edward and Theodore both of which I don't really like.

Realistically if we went with Ted I think he would be formally Edward. My question is, do you think that to give the child a formal name that you can't stand, but having the baby known as something that you really do like, is an acceptable compromise to make? I just don't want to regret it in years to come.

Does your Dh like Edward? At least one of you should like it I think.
I agree that giving nicknames as full names is a bit naff, but then giving a name you don't even like is not really ideal.
Any other names that shorten to Ted? Terrance maybe?
I love the name Edward though.

Wilsybear · 16/11/2009 15:50

Oh yes DH is very keen on Edward as a name anyway. I just have that thing where I knew Edward who has put me off the name (albeit 25 years ago lol!)

Ahhh, once you have your own Edward the old one won't matter any more - unless he was truly evil I guess. You'll form new associations.
I think if you like the nn and your Dh likes both and you only dislike the full name because of past associations then it might be a winner.

FaintlyMacabre · 16/11/2009 16:07

We have a Ted short for Edward- but we chose Edward because we loved the name, he just looked like a Ted within a few days of birth! What about the other 'Ed-' names- Edgar, Edwin, Edmund?

bluebump · 16/11/2009 16:15

I love the name Ted as a name in its own right. I like Eddie too, I guess you could have Ted as a nickname for that too.

Wilsybear · 16/11/2009 16:28

Thanks everyone. The more I think about it the more I am coming round to Edward, and I do love Ted, and Ned as well for that matter.

Not sure about Edgar, and Edwin is my sister's boyfriend's name (who I am still in 2 minds about )

we gave DD2 Alexandra because we wanted Lexie - its grown on me a lot and I'm glad we did it

I love Edward, Edwin and Edmund you could also have Theo at a push?

jellybeans · 16/11/2009 18:50

I would just use Ted. It's perfectly fine to use short names as the birth name these days. Many shortened names are far more popular than their longer forms anyway (theo, archie, leo etc). i would only use the longer name if you love that and also ALL other shortenings, if you use Edward he may end up as Eddie for example.

My DS has a shortened version of a longer name, and I have never used my full name and always go by short version. i don't really see short names like Max/Sam/Ben as nicknames but short names. For me a nn is Daz, Shazza, Loz etc.

Anyway I like Ted.

Bubbaluv · 18/11/2009 10:37

Jelly - Leo isn't a shortening.

I think Ted is really cute, but I don't think it has much gravitas and therefore might be a bit too cutesie if the boy grows up and wants to be prime minister or a high court judge??

tambourine · 18/11/2009 14:04

like ted heath?

Rumpel · 18/11/2009 14:09

Wilsy - Ted is lovely and remember once bubba is born he will grow into his name (Edward?) and you and DH will change your opinions and grow to like the name because you will always only think of your Edward .

Good luck!

Rumpel · 18/11/2009 14:10

Hmm just read Ned in previous post - not a nice name in Scotland = Non-educated delinquent - ned is a very derogatory term up here.

DaftApeth · 18/11/2009 14:24

My ds only ever uses his 'real' name, Edward, at hospital appointments.

Otherwise, he uses his nickname.

MaggiePie · 19/11/2009 08:42

I love Ted, Teddy.

I know a Tady short for Thaddeus. I love that as well.

Edward not ted on the bc though.

Is he here yet?? Ned is vile. Don't do it.

lydiathetattooedlady · 19/11/2009 09:09

if you hate edward you'll probably always hate it! we chose a short name for ds of which i hate the name it comes from so he is just known as the shortened version. we do get lots of people asking though if his name is the long version WHICH IT ISNT! I know i would always hate it so couldnt put it on birth certificate. if you want a formal name id say theodre is the best!

allaboutme · 19/11/2009 09:24

I have a Ted/Teddy short for Edward.
I named him knowing I would always call him Ted as wasnt a huge fan of Edward but loved Ted. DH loved Edward, wasnt huge fan of Ted - twas a compromise!
For a couple of weeks we both called him different things, nobody else knew what to call him
But I got my way in the end (think I am more stubborn!). I wrote all the birth announcements and thank you cards etc and called him Teddy every time. Everyone else took their cue from that.
Since he has been a newborn he has never once been called Edward, except at the doctors! and he is nearly 2 now. But it has grown on me a lot and I like it quite a lot now, so wont mind at all if he uses it when he is older.

Wilsybear · 19/11/2009 10:41

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I am still overdue, so that gives us a bit more time to sort it out. Not actually sure if it is a boy yet, but we have girls names sorted.

Ned does not seem a popular choice, and given that half of my family are Scottish it doesn't look like a good choice following Rumpel's comment about what it means up there

Rumpel · 19/11/2009 19:52

Well doen Wilsy - your Scot's rellies will thank you for it Good luck with the birth.xx

nannynobnobs · 19/11/2009 21:49

Theodore has always been on my baby name list most likely due to an unhealthy teenage affection for Bill and Ted. But Ted is a good sturdy name!
my friend Jack was christened John; I never even knew until I saw his passport. He's been Jack since birth. I like the idea of using the 'proper' name on the birth certificate, it gives him a choice when he's older.
Is he here yet?

petitmaman · 19/11/2009 21:54

go for ted. am a massive fan of Ted Dwane of Mumford and sons (google them, am crap at linking, they are great) althought he was Christened edward he has always been Ted.

AngryPixie · 19/11/2009 21:57

I have a Ted/Teddy. I put Edward on the birth certificate (under duress because I'm not keen) but at almost 2 he has never been called that. Even the GPs have altered their notes because I kept forgetting to respond to Edward.

Ted is a gorgeous name - do it !
