Julian for a girl?

I think it's quite androgynous, and have heard of girls being called Julian before (not many though). But is it too much of a boy's name?

Julie, Julia, Julianne, Julianna all sound good. Julian just sounds Famous Fiveish to me.

Most of my friends would probably get the Julian of Norwich connection [nerds]. Also, Lady Ottoline Morrell called her daughter Julian...

But I do take the point of most posters that it is very fixed in most people's minds as a boy's name.

I would pronounce Julianne as 'Julie-Anne' and Julienne as 'Julie-Enn'

I much prefer the pronunciation of Julian and I think it's rather nice as a girl's name. There's a town near me in California called Julian that's famous for apple pie and snow in winter

Mezley · 15/11/2009 02:26

It's your baby and your choice, but do consider her feelings. How would you have felt if your parents had called you Gordon for example (assuming you are a woman of course!)

BabyDancer83 · 15/11/2009 02:49

It's like this:
Robert - Roberta
Daniel - Danielle
Julian - Julianne
it will be confusing because it's a boys name! would you call a girl Robert??

Nahla · 15/11/2009 03:23

Really like Julianna.

I don't like it as a boy's name, let alone a girl's name. Is it really the loveliest name for a girl you can think of? If so, go for it.

I know a woman called Gareth. As other posters have said, it causes all manner of confusion.

InMyLittleHead · 15/11/2009 12:25

Oh, Mezley it's hardly the same! Julian is quite a feminine boys name imo, whereas Gordon is...not (just looked at our beloved PM)

Please don't do it. Your daughter might resent you forever. Julian may be seen by some as a bit androgenous and 'Another Country', but I would have to disagree. My brother is called Julian and is as masculine and alpha male as it comes.

Squishabelle · 15/11/2009 12:34

I have never heard of a female Julian. I am very that the op has heard of a few.

goingtohaveagoodnightssleep · 15/11/2009 12:36

I would assume she is a boy too. To be honest I don't like the name Julian for a boy as it does sound quite girly.
At playgroup I met a girl called Riley and am always tempted to ask her parents why they have given her a boys name!

Ponders · 15/11/2009 12:38

I was at primary school with a girl called Julina - thought nothing of it at the time, now I wonder if they meant to have Juliana but spelt it wrong

Anyway there you go, op - have Julina (anag) instead!

Ponders · 15/11/2009 12:39

(pron Ju-leena btw, not Ju-liner)

IsItMeOr · 15/11/2009 12:50

Yes, but Julian of Norwich was only called that because of the church where she hung out, not because it was her name. The original Saint Julian was a man, no?

Actually, just checked, and the original Saint Julian is apparently believed to be a myth. But in the myth it was a man.

It is a boys name. Please find a girls name that you like if you don't want your daughter to feel that you really wished she was a boy.

Just as bad for a girl as it is for a boy. Yuck!

pranma · 15/11/2009 18:15

Dont worry-go with it and,'All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.'To quote Julian of Norwich.

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 15/11/2009 18:22

I asked myself this very question recently and have decided on Juliet.

Because I think the reactions are 'you've got that wrong, it's a boy's name'.

PuppyMonkey · 15/11/2009 18:25

Doesn't matter whether a girl or boy, tis shite.

Love how all the closet medievalists have surfaced...
