I love this name, but DH isn't sure... he says it reminds him of Stella Artois

Not due until July but know it will take us FOREVER to decide... What does the MN jury think?

Beautiful name but very common now, if that would bother you at all

Adair · 13/11/2009 14:09

Gorgeous. Not heard another one.
Anyway, not sure being common matters anyway. Our dd is Aphra, fairly uncommon we'd expect but she has a friend Aphra she met in the local park

mathanxiety · 13/11/2009 14:35

Great name. A classic that is great for any age.

CuppaTeaJanice · 13/11/2009 14:41

My gran had a friend called Stella who had a tracheotomy (sp?). I was sitting on her lap one day at the age of about six when I noticed the hole in her throat - it was about the scariest thing I'd ever seen.

Now reminds me more of Artois, McCartney and the baby from Shameless.

Seededbiatch · 13/11/2009 14:44

I'm afraid I'm with your DH OP, I instantly think of the beer and Stella Mc Cartney.

Not keen.

I know an Aphra, she's 38 though, so not the one you met in the park!

I think I'd go for Estella, and nn Stella or Estelle. Stella is a name that is perceived negatively by some people and I can't figure out why. I remember suggesting to my Mum and she nearly died. She said are you trying to make me vomit. She said it was a milk maid's name. (she grew up on a farm). Bizarre comment with no basis I thought. But a lot of people really hate this seemingly pretty name.

birdofthenorth · 13/11/2009 16:34

I like it but I think your DH has a point about the beer teasing... "Stella" = "wife beater" in a lot of blokes vocabulary I'm afraid!

Congrats on your new pregnancy, very exciting!

ScottishBoris · 13/11/2009 16:37

I've got a Stella and on the whole most people love the name. We've had few "named her after your favourite drink, did ya?" comments, but a short reminder that Stella is actually Latin for Star usually shuts them up. I haven't met another Stella around here and the local headteacher informed me this year that this would be the first Stella she's ever had in a school (and she's a good age) so I don't think it's that common.

Aphra sounds lovely too, does it have a specific meaning?

AnnaSui · 13/11/2009 16:37

I sympathise btw, I really, really loved the name Vivien, but it was the young ones only to my x

Arsed · 13/11/2009 16:40

DD was almost Stella, it's lovely !

( i kind of wish i'd used stella now too, we chose grace, along with 2/3 of the country!)

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 13/11/2009 16:42

'Tis utterly lovely. The name we narrowly missed using for dd.

Stella Artois never featured in our thinking (unworldly types )

BettyButterknife · 13/11/2009 19:12

Hmm, interesting. Not sure I'll be able to persuade DH but good to hear it's not universally hated

Thanks

I love it too but DH said the Artois thing and wouldn't have it so we have Rosie instead.

BikeRunSki · 13/11/2009 22:08

My niece is Stella, nn Lala, so I love it. She needed a friend that worked in English, French and Italian. Was a bit at first, but the larger connotations dissappeared pretty quickly.

DitaVonCheese · 14/11/2009 16:51

Love it but doesn't work with our surname

ihaveaheadache · 14/11/2009 17:05

love, love, love the name Stella. It is a beautiful name for a baby, a toddler and a woman. Would love to name my next baby Stella but it is the name of a friend's daughter...I wish it was my name!

Muser · 14/11/2009 17:11

I don't think of the lager, it reminds me of Stella from A Streetcar Named Desire. Which does mean I mostly think of someone (probably Marlon Brando) drunkenly yelling Steeeeellllaaaa! Good name though.

I love this name and it was definitely on my shortlist for dd. It was vetoed by dh for exactly the same reasons!!! How about Estella? May have already been suggested I haven't read all the thread?!

GrumpyYoungFogey · 15/11/2009 21:58

A perfectly nice if somewhat m/c name forever spoiled by the modern day popularity of Old Wifebeater.
