Elsa Marianné

Everyone was very helpful last time I posted on the board with my shortlist for girls and boys... looks like we're having a girl so I'm nearly decided on;

Elsa Marianné

(Marianné after my Gran but was spelt Marianne pronounced Marianna)

Not sure whether to just go with the easier spelling of Marianna for form filling or go with the accented version.

My DH is not convinced about Elsa though (neither are the in laws) everyone saying it is too old fashioned, but I still love it. He wants me to go with Emma instead as a more 'acceptable' name.

What does everyone think?

I think it is beautiful

MintyCane · 06/11/2009 10:31

I love Emma Marianne as well it has a lovely ring to it.

Meita · 06/11/2009 10:41

My childhood best friend was called Marianne, but pronounced Mah-ree-ahnn. Which is also how the name would be pronounced in French.

My partner having an 'umlaut' (ä) in his name, I'd strongly advise against the é - I stopped counting how many times he had to send back forms and re-apply for stuff (like bank accounts, land registry documents, driving licenses, utility bills...) and some offices point-blank refuse to write it correctly - meaning his name is spelled differently on various documents.

Also: In Marianné the é is French, but the French would not write it like this, nor would your intended pronounciation be a French name. The Germans would pronounce Marianne (without the é) the way you want it to be pronounced but would never use the é. It seems a bit strange to use a French letter to signify that a name should be pronounced in a German way... it feels a bit pretentious even, I'd say.

I like Elsa

loobylu3 · 06/11/2009 11:13

Elsa Marianne is beautiful! Prefer without accent and without the 'a' sound at the end. It flows better too.

Bettymum · 06/11/2009 11:20

Elsa McGregor, what a beautiful beautiful name. Elsa Marianne McGregor also sounds lovely.
Do you think Elsa would suit a DS due in April??

MaggieMonday · 06/11/2009 12:47

you're right betty mum, that has a really nice ring to it.

Elsa Marianne McGregor. Seh sounds like a proper person aleady.

Bettymu,, what about Victor, Donald, Bruce, Roscoe, Howie or Richie (oldman chic)

Sunshinemummy · 06/11/2009 12:57

I love it. Elsa is gorgeous and I love using a relatives name for the middle name.

ludog · 06/11/2009 13:07

Yayyy...everyone likes my name (Marianne no accent)!

MaggieMonday · 06/11/2009 13:08

oooh lucky you ludog, that is a seriously classy name.

thumbwitch · 06/11/2009 13:12

like lots of others, I like your name choice but would lose the 'é' at the end of Marianné and either have a plain 'e' or an 'a'. Much simpler longterm.

Bettymum · 06/11/2009 13:24

Maggie I suggested Bruce to DH only last night, I love it. He hates it
Quite liking Richie with our surname

Thissideofchannel · 06/11/2009 13:34

Elsa is much nicer than Emma imo.

I like Marianne - in GermanDutch/Scandinavian it would be pronounced Mariann-eh. Only in French and English do you not pronounce the -e at the end.

Elsa Marianne is beautiful!

MaggieMonday · 06/11/2009 13:45

I think Bruce is due a revival. It has that max / gus one syllable snappy push back the boundaries chic.

I read something in a magazine recently, woman had a Bruce of two years old. I thought, oooh!

Mark from the peep show wanted to call the baby Bruce, lol! (I liked it first ) Sophie wanted tarquin.

Bettymum · 06/11/2009 14:28

DH does like Max, I like it too.
Actually, DH wants Maximus which might be a bit much.

(sorry for hijacking your thread Beanigan)

Winibaghoul · 06/11/2009 14:48

Loving Elsa Marianne - beautiful, classy sounding name I think.
Emma is a little too common (in the sense of well used that is, not as in 'beneath me' )

jkklpu · 06/11/2009 20:41

don't use the accent - it's made up
Marianne is a lovely name, as is Marian/Marion - don't mess with it

JANEITEluddite · 06/11/2009 20:42

I love Marianne (tis my mythical dd3's name) but deffo lose the accent.

InThisSequinBraYesYouOlaJordan · 06/11/2009 21:22

My MIL was Ailsa, pronounced very similarly, which I was going to use for a middle name for DD1 (who turned to be DS2 ;) ) - could be an alternative to Elsa, but more modern (although MIL would have been nearly 70, so not that modern)

pointydogg · 06/11/2009 22:49

yes, ailsa is a much better name

MmmHmm · 06/11/2009 23:10

Ailsa may be similar but IMO is frumpy, clumpy and has little charm.

Elsa has a sweet elegance about it and has more to offer than Emma which had its time (again) in the late 70's/early 80's so too early for a revival. Emma is actually more old fashioned in that respect than Elsa. In the same way that a Teasmade may be newer than a Victorian silver teapot but I know which one has more style.

Marianne with an accent (sorry don't know how to do it on the keyboard) is pretentious (sorry).

If you want Marianna then definitely put Marianna.

If you want Marianne said Marianna then just pronounce and spell, same as your Gran did

thumbwitch · 07/11/2009 00:15

To me, Ailsa is Alf Stewart's dead wife in Home & AWay. But then I am very sad.
Prefer Elsa (can't be doing with Emma)

TheTerribleSpider · 07/11/2009 00:33

Elsa is lovely, although it makes me want to sing "Born free"

boodleboot · 07/11/2009 12:32

Elsa is ok. Friend of mine has just had a beautiful baby and called her Elva.....which i personally prefer to Elsa....

if you want her to be Elsa Mariann - a then i think an A at the end is the way to go...no accent.

malung · 07/11/2009 13:38

From one McGregor to another, Marianne McGregor sounds fantastic. Marianna McGregor even better. Elsa and Emma nice but popular.Good Luck

Beanigan · 08/11/2009 16:24

Thank you very much everyone! OK accented version of Marianne - general gist it's pretentios - fair enough....

My Gran was German so has no accent and makes complete sense to me now NOT to use it. Elsa Marianne it is.

Quite excited now - especially since my DH has just said 'oh whatever, call her that if you like!'
