Zachary - is it VERY popular?

I'm looking for a not-too-over-used boy's name. I do like this, but I just wanted to get a feel for whether there are already 5 in every nursery out there or if it is still somewhat unusual.

Any thoughts welcome!
TIA

CuppaTeaJanice · 02/11/2009 16:12

I have only met 3 in my life. One is 34, one 13 and one about 6. There are none as far as I know at DSs nursery.

Thanks everyone.

Mutt - you're right, it will definitely get shortened. I don't mind, though. I like Zak/Zach too. It was Zac Effron in 17again that made me think of it actually, but his very presence in life may mean that a flurry of little Zacs emerge over the next few years LOL!!

jlo - yes, it's a fine line between unusual and wacky isnt it, and even harder to get the balance right with boy's names than girl's names I think. Love Jameson, but you might be right about the whiskey connection! I also like Harrison, considered it too, but it would get shortened to Harry and that would be too popular for my liking.

I know a man Zachary but all the kids I know are just Zac/zack/Zak, know of about 4. It is still not as popular as Sam, Oliver, Jack etc though, don't think it is top 50. I say go for it.

peanutbutterkid · 02/11/2009 18:02

I know one under 10; well, I don't really know him. I remember meeting him at a BBQ 3 years ago.

Don't know any at our school.

But even if it is "popular" it doesn't matter! You would be very unlucky to be in the same class as another one of whatever name you choose however high up the top 100 it is. If you like it, use it. The worst that could happen is that there will be another one, and one will have to be Zac and the other Zachary. Hardly life-time trauma territory!

TheMightyToosh · 03/11/2009 09:45

seeker - thanks for your message, but it really was never poised as "life-trauma territory". I'm just keen not to give my baby a name that will make him one of 8 in his year at school, so he won't be Max D or Daniel F all of his school life.

It's my choice to look for a name that isn't over-used, and that was the point of my OP.

I have an 11 year old Zachary.

sonniebonnie · 03/11/2009 09:55

There happen to be 3 little Zac's in ds's reception class and they are indeed called Zacky, Zac and Zacary... in order to differentiate them.

Of course this isn't life-time trauma territory, but having been a Clare B myself (in addition to Clare S and Clare R in my class), I'd rather have had a more unique name.

So I do understand the OP in her search for a name that she loves but that is not overly popular.

Zacharysmummy · 29/04/2010 20:52

I have an 11 week old Zachary

MrsToffeeCrisp · 29/04/2010 21:07

I have an 11 month old Zachary!

I still love it!

It does seem to be growing in popularity but don't think it'll ever be up there with Jack and Emily.

I say go for it.

I love Harrison too BTW.

SE13Mummy · 29/04/2010 21:52

I know a handful of Zacharys under the age of 5 and have taught a couple but wouldn't say it's any more/less overused than Harry/Harrison/Jack/Benjamin/Samuel/Thomas/William or Isaac.

Zachary is a great name and, as there's no way you can predict how many other boys with the same name will end up in his class, I'd just choose it regardless of current popularity.

whywhywhydelilah · 29/04/2010 22:36

I think it is quite popular but thats probably because its a great name!
