Another Adult Name Change - Claire Louise

floraldays · 29/10/2009 11:42

Laura's thread prompted me to post this.

I've wanted to change for a while, personal reasons and family associations. I'll be changing officially - deed poll.

I'd love some ideas. I'd like something classic, feminine, simple. Nothing too class associated or frilly (e.g Araminta, Arabella)or too current.

Would people recommend keeping my name as middle names, or should I go the whole hog and change those too?

Thank you in advance

Tortington · 29/10/2009 11:50

Tortington · 29/10/2009 11:51

how about lou? just Lou

Tortington · 29/10/2009 11:51

or Lulu - thats quite nice

floraldays · 29/10/2009 11:53

Yes, I suppose that's a good reason for the change too Custy.
Thanks, but I don't want a name which is similar or connected to my present name. I would only consider keeping them as middle names if it proved more helpful officially, for documents etc.

Susannah May
Jessica Eve
Fiona Jane
Lucy Elle

I'm bloomin' hard to pick an adult name! With a child you have a blank canvas - with an adult there's all kinds of things to consider.

Is there a name that you think of yourself as? Or a person you look up to whose name you love?

floraldays · 29/10/2009 13:57

Not really. I like Lucy from those, though a close friend is Lucy so that wouldn't work.

It has to be a name from the era you were born in I think, so as not to be too 'stand out as a brand new name'
Are you a 70's baby?
How about
Sarah
Julia
Emma
Melanie
Chloe?

diddl · 29/10/2009 14:07

My fave name is Hebe, but I don´t think I´d be brave enough!

Also like Claudia,Eleanor, Harriet, Jessica, Sarah and Jette (Pronounced Yet-a).

BaronessBarbaraKingstanding · 29/10/2009 14:58

Emma is a lovely classic name, that fits all ages and classes.

Claire is nice also but not quite so classic more a 70's name.

bellissima · 30/10/2009 11:06

Well adding Mae, May, Elle, Rae, Rose etc as a middle name would certainly rejuvenate you - place you right in the noughties! But, as others have commented, this might look a bit odd. And one day Clara and Louisa will no doubt look as dated as Claire Louise, Sarah-Louise whatever.

But not all 70s names were on the list handed out in the maternity ward (Claire, Nicola, Samantha etc). Some mothers dared to rebel!

For starters, if going for Claire drop the i. Clare is the proper English spelling and much more classic. Emma, as already noted is 70s but has also worn well and is still used (but don't add Jane!). I also know 70s Emilys, Madeleines, Kates and so on.

ClaraDeLaNoche · 30/10/2009 11:17

Clare is beautiful, anyway it is spelt, and it can only enhance you as a person.

Although I did once receive a letter addressed to "Clayer". Not sure about that way.

jellybeans · 30/10/2009 11:48

I like

Leah
Leona
Cara
Tia
Joelle
Beth
Danielle
Megan
Jessica
Eve
Nicole

MamaLazarou · 30/10/2009 15:08

Nicole! Nicole is a classy name for a grown-up lady: easy to spell and cosmopolitan.

letsblowthistacostand · 31/10/2009 02:21

I think your name is lovely, have used versions of both for my 2 dds! (one first, one middle)

Sophie Claire Louise
Hannah Claire Louise
Edith Claire Louise
Emma Claire Louise
Lauren Claire
Olivia Claire
Cherith Louise (knew a Cherith once, not sure if it's made up but sure is pretty)

liliputlady · 31/10/2009 06:20

Feminine simple names I love are:

Kate
Emma
Louise
Laura
Rachel
Rebecca
Joanna
Jane
Anna
Sarah

Ask your close friends which name would suit you.

Good luck.

cranberrie · 31/10/2009 14:38

Emma and Anna are both quite nice.

liliputlady · 31/10/2009 15:00

..and Charlotte.

Clarabelle149 · 20/11/2009 23:42

Keep your names, if you must change, keep them as middle names! I think they are lovely.

I also feel the need to something up for the mums to be. Bellissima is not correct about how Claire/Clare should be spelled. Claire is a name of French origin, namely the feminine form of the adjective clair, meaning bright, light, clear or fair (as in fair complexioned). Saint Claire was a French saint. In the Middle Ages she was referred to as Saint Clare in English, in the same way as Francoise becamse Frances. So it is completely incorrect to say that Claire is incorrect and Clare is correct. They are both right, but if you want to stay true to the French language origins of the name, Claire is the spelling you would be better off chosing.
