I love it. He will get called Fin for short.

Iklboo · 27/10/2009 15:28

DS's best friend is called Finley (or finnerly as Ds pronounces it). It's a lovely name

RainRainGoAway · 27/10/2009 15:30

Cute enough.

Hundreds of Finley/Finlays in this area. Starting to become a bit 'chav' though.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 27/10/2009 15:31

Good choice. Finn is becoming fairly popular, but it's a good name, IMO

Bucharest · 27/10/2009 15:32

Yes, lots and lots of Finleys around.

Agree with RainRain's comment.

thehairybabysmum · 27/10/2009 15:40

I have a Finlay Lucas so i love it but am obv. biased!

Im not a chav though, honest!!

RainRainGoAway · 27/10/2009 16:13

I don't think it is totally a chav name - it is really nice but it is becoming a bit...around!

I think it is lovely and would never have thought 'chav'

Thinkstoomuch · 27/10/2009 16:19

Finley very popular round our way. And combined with Lewis ...sorry, no.

disappearhere · 27/10/2009 16:28

This is not a name I have used or like - someone I know used it. First thought was that one of the Baldwin brothers and Lisa Marie Presley have daughters called Finley. I thought the male spelling was Finlay?

Also Finley Lewis has too many 'LE' sounds.

I really really don't like it! I think it is pure chav, particularly the combination of the two names (too much!) and the stupid spelling.

Cute when 1yr old perhaps. But at 40, with the babyish spelling?

Names go in cycles. Look at the name Lauren - totally gorgeous but now associated with being a bit ropey. (my sister age 30 is called Lauren and there were none around the time that she was born - now they are everywhere.) I think that is like Finley.

thrifty · 27/10/2009 16:41

thats not very nice disappearhere.

there are lots of ways of spelling Finley, how can a spelling be babyish and it is a boys name. however i've just finished reading a book by a US author with a female Toby in it!

FWIW there are loads of Finley's round this wway. There were 4 in DS's pre-school last year and I know 3 Lewis's under the age of 4 (again with different spellings. so they are both quite popular names at the moment.

I can't talk though. we named ds Jake. I didnt know another Jake that was under 22 until after he wasborn. now they are everywhere!

Jamieandhismagictorch · 27/10/2009 16:46

I would never describe a name as "chav".

IMO there are lots of names that "people like us" like until "people that are not like us" start to like and use them too .... . Lauran and Alfie are good examples.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 27/10/2009 16:47

Lauren, I mean - typing too fast !

disappearhere · 27/10/2009 16:52

thrifty you're right, it wasn't very nice. The background is that his mother has admitted that he's an accessory: 'I hate kids' then later 'everyone's got one and I felt left out' were her actual words to me. When she gave him this name, I just felt a bit sorry for the LO. I know it shouldn't matter, but it felt she gave him a 'trendy' name to go with what she sees as a fashion 'accessory'.

Whether I like the name or not is irrelevant, I know that. It's just I feel and for the little guy anyway, I suppose.

I'll rein it in...

OP posts:
thehairybabysmum · 29/10/2009 09:31

You sound like a right snotty cow v. judgmental; i doubt having a 'trendy' name will have a long term impact on the baby.

Maybe his mother just changed her mind about having kids and was telling you in a light-hearted way. Poor woman if she considers you a friend as you are clearly a 2 faced one.

Anyway what would i know being 'pure chav' and all that !!!

chillmanor · 29/10/2009 09:37

Finlay is considered downmarket round here. I think it's quite rough from experience and there are lots.

AngryFromManchester · 29/10/2009 09:42

haha I have a Finlay (that is how you spell it the scottish way) and I am not rough. I called him afer myself (vain) as it is the male verision of Fiona. I am however quite dismayed at how many Finleys there are, I did not quite realise beforehand...

MRSwereWOOLFhasabroomofherown · 29/10/2009 16:45

Not really my taste. I agree popular, and quite trendy.

halfcut · 29/10/2009 16:46

I love it

halfcut · 29/10/2009 16:47

and lol @ down market

Salonly · 29/10/2009 20:24

Finlay and Finn (on my list!) are beautiful names. I have never met a 'chav' Finn or Finlay. I have met a few and all 4/5 from the middle-classes or normal folk.

I do not like the spelling Finley though just because it looks wrong. Lewis is ok but doesn't flow well with Finley.

I think this thread is a bit strange. As are the other similar threads on here at the moment.

toddlerama · 29/10/2009 20:33

Like Finn, not keen on Finlay. For some reason I agree with it sounding a bit 'downmarket' but I can't put my finger on why - I don't know any! If you think it's a strange thread, why would you join in?

Wilts · 29/10/2009 20:39

I have a Finley- It has become very popular, but there is not a lot we can do about that now!

If you like it go for it- people will always have an opinion on the name you choose.
