Really hoping she isn't on here.. a good friend is expecting a girl in a few weeks and is already calling her Jemima. Everytime she says it, I have to stop myself saying "Puddleduck". Whats your opinion? Her other choice was Amelie which I much prefer.

i have a Jemima - never had a bad comment (at least to my face). we are far from 'posh' and if there are ever comments it's to say what a fab name it is or how well it suits dd2. and there's nothing wrong with the puddleduck associations - lovely stories and lovely pictures.

I love it. My xmil American though and she nearly had a heart attack when I wanted to call dc1 Jemima. She is black too, and it carries all sorts of derogatory baggage. Ididn't even blieve her at first.

Gorgeous name tho imo

Reminds me of Aunt Jemima

I really like Jemima (DH has vetoed though). It is hebrew/biblical and means "dove" so I think linked with peace etc. It is a family name for us so I think of DH's Grandmother before fictional characters. Amelie is exceptionally popular at the moment. It is a pretty name but very now, along with all the Emilys & Amelias (names which I also like but would avoid for that reason.) I find it quite surprising that such a french name has made such a transition into english culture (makes me wonder why others such as Aurelie etc would always remain french iyswim).

Your friend's baby will just be Jemima to you and any other associations will soon fade.

mathanxiety · 29/10/2009 15:08

You don't hear the name much at all in the US thanks to Aunt Jemima pancake syrup, cornflour, etc. It's a great pity, imo. And I have never understood how the manufacturers get away with depicting a black woman, clearly a cook of some kind, in a servant's/slave's headscarf in this day and age.

I think the name Aurelie sounds too like 'orally' for British ears. Aurelia might not suffer this disadvantage though.

I have a friend Jemima and we call her Mima.

blindhorse1 · 29/10/2009 21:51

I love love love the name. We have a Jemima -we're not posh and get so many comments on how lovely the name is. We don't get the puddleduck associations apart from the odd story book present and anyway, it's not as if that's a bad one.

HerHonesty · 29/10/2009 21:56

amelie/amelia etc will be the sharons of their time. jemima on the other hand is lovely and hardly used at all.

pointyhat · 29/10/2009 21:58

I do not like Jemima one bit, never have.

piscesmoon · 29/10/2009 22:01

I just automatically think Puddleduck-I can't separate them.

liliputlady · 29/10/2009 23:13

I wouldn't choose it, but like it and it brings back fond memories of Playschool!

HydeTheCock · 29/10/2009 23:17

I love it, always have, always will.

My Dad used to call me Jemima Puddleduck when I was little. I don't know why my name is a million miles away from Jemima but it is a beautiful name.

I will be using it if I am lucky enough to have another DD.

KAEKAE · 30/10/2009 20:14

I quite like it and did suggest it to my DP but he was having none of it. It doesn't remind me of the duck at all!

Jemima4 · 30/11/2009 21:22

I am a Jemima and there are so few of us around, in my age group at least, that whenever I have met another one we have always had a chat . My nicknames include 'Puddle', 'Duck' and 'Mima' and I have always thought it was lovely to have my own Beatrix Potter character.

MamaLazarou · 01/12/2009 07:53

I love Jemima: it's feminine without being twee, and classy without being snooty. Much nicer than Amelie, which is too trendy right now, and will date badly. Amelie also reminds me of that atrocious film from a few years ago. It always sounds to my ears like someone mispronouncing Emily.

LuckyC · 09/12/2009 12:21

Jemima gorgeous. I think of it as quirky and quite cool and offbeat rather than jolly hockey sticks. But I know no posh people, so...

mrswill · 09/12/2009 13:48

Love it, love it, love it, wish id used it for my dd, but we went with a traditional welsh name instead. Gutted as she really suits Jemima.

MadreInglese · 09/12/2009 13:49

LOVE Jemima
