Similar sounding names.....

If you had a Rufus already, would you call another boy Magnus?

I love the name, but DH thinks that Rufus and Magnus is OTT

We're struggling with names for DC4...and having 6 months to find one isn't comforting - DS2 (DC3) took a while to get a name!

I love Magnus and Rufus!

In what way is the combination OTT - because of the -us at the ends of both? Perhaps they sound a little similar, but if you love the name, I'd still use Magnus! Don't think they sound THAT similar.

I have a Tristan and in looking for a name for (unborn) DC2 have the same issues over names like Ewan, Rowan etc; but most people think I'm just being overly sensiitive!

I wouldn't wory about it.

I don't think they're similar enough for you to have to avoid them. And both are really lovely names!

Oh, thank you - much more positive than I was expecting. DH thinks having two -us sounding names is too much. I don't think that it's an insurmountable problem as one doesn't use one's children's names together all THAT often I guess.....

I know what you mean but if you really like the name then will you forever be wishing?

I have a Hector and really liked the name Victor but we didn't go for it because it sounded too matching but we only have 2DC, I think balanced out with more children then it wouldn't sound so rhyming.

What else is on your short list?

Pippilongstockings - funnily enough, I love the name Hector, but we have a double-barrelled surname beginning with H - and I'm not sure about the alliteration.

We've got a really short list and I'm not sure we love any of them really -although I do really love Magnus.

Dominic, Benedict, Barnaby, Bartholomew (Tolly), and we had Angus on our list before, but have the same issue with the -us ending. I also love Monty, but DH has vetoed that.

Girls - probably leaning towards Beatrice/Beatrix and not sure about the middle names (they all have 2) yet.

I like names ending with o so would not hesitate to call any more boys I had names ending in o.

I would avoid Benedict as he will end up as Ben. It's too long not to shorten imo.

Don't think the Romans had this problem. Go for it, Magnus would get shortened to Mags whether you like it or not.

I wouldn't worry about it.

We have a Hannah and Issy (who are in their teens) and a harry and Imogen (who are babies)

Said quickly... they sound almost identical (especially if we call Imogen Immy!)

I didn't think about it before hand and I'm glad I didn't!!!

I knew a family who had 2 girls Natasha and Natalie. "Tash and Nats" and no-one could ever get their names right. Their family got quite offended.

BTW, a boy I know is called Magnus. He is always called Maggie at school. Just be aware!

I wouldn't with two, but maybe with four. On the other hand how often do you get the names of your existing kids muddled (my mum did with me and my sisters all the time) my dd and her cousin and step cousin all have quite similar names and it does get into a muddle when they are all around. I take it you wouldn't be using any diminutives?

Both lovely, lovely names. I would go for both of them but my DH wouldn't for the same reasons as your DH. I had Benedict, Monty and Rufus on my list for DC3. All vetoed by DH and we went for Felix.

Thanks AngryPixie - hadn't thought of that particular nn, so that's probably put the kibosh on that one!

Suwoo - great minds!! I had Felix on my shortlist for DS1 (Theo) but DH thought it too catlike.....

Magnus = Maggie....umm, will have to keep thinking that one - I guess any name can be turned into something silly. Am hoping that Rufus doesn't get barked at through school - still, there will be two of them in the same year, as one of my friends also has one (grr!) so they can form a pack
