Changing my daughter's middle name

My daughter is called Charlotte Emily. She was originally going to be Charlotte Rose (Rose is my mum's name); however I changed my mind before she was born as I thought Rose was too popular as a middle name...

I now regret my snobbishness! I really wanted my daughter to have a family name as a middle name (as my son has). I always thought if I had a daughter her middle name would be Rose.

I am also having doubts about the combination we chose... A friend asked me if calling her 'Charlotte Emily' was the literary equivalent of calling a child 'John Paul George Ringo'. I do love the Brontes, but it kind of put a doubt in my mind that using both names together is a bit too Bronte...

Maybe I'm being silly... But if I wanted to change her middle name now how difficult would it be (assuming I can convince my husband to agree)? My daughter is only 7 months.

you just have to go and re register her as she is under one its really easy if you want to do it I would do it quickly because once they turn one it becomes more complicated

sorry I seem to have forgotten to put any punctuation in there I blame the sleeping baby on my knee

gladders · 20/10/2009 14:40

think it would be pretty easy to do but tbh it is only a middle name?

your friend's comment is a bit odd as well - they are both very pretty traditional names - why should the bront link mean anything - I know of at least 2 families with a Charlotte and an Emily!

You could add Rose so she has two middle names

thisisyesterday · 20/10/2009 14:50

it's easy to change if she is under one. go to the registry office and ask them

i have a friend who always regretted her child's middle name, she finally changed it when he was about 17m and is so happy that she did

so my advice is do it!

Mammina · 20/10/2009 15:37

agree with Issy, just add Rose
Charlotte Emily Rose... they go nicely together

As the others have said, it is very easy while your DD is under a year old - so long as she hasn't been christened in the original name already. You just go along to the registry office, fill in a form, and you get a new birth certificate. If she has already been christened, you'd need to go via deed poll, but I don't think this too complicated either.

The short birth certificate will have the new name, but the long certificate will have the original name in box 2, and the new name in box 17.

I like the idea of going with Charlotte Emily Rose too.

I changed DDs name by adding in a new first name, and making the original name an additional second name. I don't like the original name at all (it's a long story how I ended up agreeing to it), and if I could go back in time to the birth I would have the new name with the original middle name only. As she had had the name for 5 months (even though I hardly ever used it - using sweetie, darling etc almost all the time!), I didn't feel comfortable removing it completely - mainly as I will need to explain the change one day. Sometimes I wish I had though, but it's too late now

Thanks, I hadn't really considered having two middle names, but Charlotte Emily Rose is beautiful. I will see what DH thinks...

Thanks for all the advice!

Add Rose, they all go nicely together!

I really wouldnt get stressed about a middle name. Realistically they are pretty pointless and never used.

I think it's what the name Rose means to YOU personally that is important here. I can totally relate to that-my daughter's middle name is my mum's. I think you should add it/change it from Emily if it will give you peace of mind. Don't worry about the popularity thing-people seem to get so hung up on finding rare names/trying to be different these days-the internet has a lot to answer for!

Well it's taken me ages, but we finally went to the registry office. As DD is under one it was simple - we just filled out a form and paid for new certificates.

My daughter is now Charlotte Emily Rose - which feels exactly right.

I know we'll hardly ever use the middle names, but changing it has definitely given me peace of mind. I just wish I'd spent less time on the internet stressing about popularity :-)
