DSs 1-3 all have singe syllable first names as best for shouting at we felt that worked well with three syllable last name.
However, we are seriously stuck for a name for DS4, due next March. I am under severe pressure for "Jack" which I do not dislike but IMO it has become too common popular.
Names I like ie Ben, Luke, Mark do not work due to surname (think "BenDowney", gettit, gettit??).
Also name should kind of "work" in German, too, or at least be easy to pronounce.

Sooooo:
Joe
Karl/Carl
Matt: not glossy in German
Ross: horse in German

You see my dilemma, short list is very short. Anybody who known me in RL will recongnise me from this but here goes: our other names are Tom, Sam and Max.

Oh, please inspire me!! Or should we just completely go the other way and call him Bartholomew?? Just looked at the thread about Sebastian and really quite like that...

I was at a playground today and every second child was Ollie or SEb.

Miles is better, much more unusual too.

Thank you all, lots of food for thought here (special thanks to geordieminx - how did the wedding go?)

I know I am being unreasonable picky, but don't want a name that is obviously shortened ie Seb for Sebastian. Don't want a name than means something in either language ie Miles as in "10 miles away" or Jude (which incidentally I love) but means "jew" in German and horrible history connection aside, I would equally not chose to call my child "Muslim" or "Buddhist", well you get my drift, or so I very sincerely hope.

My favorites so far:
Joe
Zach
Kai
John
Leo - I know, technically 2 syllables, but heyho, 3 letters
Paul

Is the general consensus that long first name plus long last name is a no-no?

Thanks again, for everybody's efforts.

Joe - ok but short for Joseph!
Zach - like it but short for Zachary
Kai - chav not mystyle at all
John - OK. I like Jonnie, despite Boden!! but it breaks your one syllable rule!
Leo - I love this one.
Paul - bit dull. Saul is better.

PacificWerewolfwoohood · 18/10/2009 20:47

I know I am not being entirely logical (understatement), oops!

Now, the Leo thing: I like Leo more and more, even had an Uncle Leo so could claim some kind of family tradition, however DH objects vehemently because of the Leo Blair connection. Is Tony's youngest the first Leo that comes to the collective MN mind when hearing the name?

Wedding was fab, as was honeymoon, appointment on tues

I'm presuming boys surname isnt the same as the one that I know?

I think Leo and Zach are the nicest from your list - Paul is a bit.... 80's?? Argee with poster that suggested Johnny.

I dont think you necessaryily have to have a short first name with a long surname, although if you give ds a 3-syllable name he might feel like he got the short straw when he is older compared to his brothers?

What about Alex? Billy? Cain? Ewen? Finn? Harry? Issac? Jay? Noah?

RustyBear · 18/10/2009 20:50

A friend of mine just called her baby Cayde, which I'd never thought of, but now really like (though I would leave the y out for simplicity in spelling)

geordieminx · 18/10/2009 20:50

Nah.... I thought of Leo Di Caprio.... (((swoon))))

PacificWerewolfwoohood · 18/10/2009 20:55

Good luck on Tuesday, geordie.

Hm, Leo De Caprio, I could live with that association...

Also, hm, Cade, not bad, will have to mull that one over a bit, but thanks!

I don't like Leo, it is this generation's version of Lee!

I like John, it's quite unusual these days.

geordieminx · 18/10/2009 21:00

I asked Dh what he thought of when I said "Leo"

His response was "you make me feel like dancing" (in a whiney singy type voice), followed up by "Leo Sayer the ginger frizzy haired freak

Definitely didnt mention Leo Blair though , although apparently he is a red (liverpool) so its not a bad thing

Bloke logic at its finest.

Lapsedrunner · 18/10/2009 21:03

John/Johan

PacificWerewolfwoohood · 18/10/2009 21:14

Oh, oh, Johan, my late granddad's name, also there is the Welsh Ioan, but vetoed by DH as too "weird" . We've also already used it as a middle name, same with Joseph.

ROFL at bloke logic!
