Just read
this

"A woman has admitted to being 'an abortion addict' after having 15 terminations over 17 years. "

yes, all very interesting, but:

"Now a successful literary agent with two young daughters, Loretta, five, and Lolita, three"

Lolita?????

WTF?

Looks like she was named after her great-grandmother:

"In her book, Mrs Vilar also revealed how she is haunted by a tragic past. Her grandmother, Puerto Rican nationalist Lolita Lebron, was jailed for 25 years after storming the U.S. Capitol building with a gun in 1954."

KERALA1 · 14/10/2009 13:56

She sounds rather troubled (not to mention mad as a hatter)

mummyofprincesses · 14/10/2009 14:16

Lolita is a lovely name and I believe it is still widely used around the world. We seem to have too many hang ups with names and their possible links in this country.

The other stuff is madness!

KERALA1 · 14/10/2009 14:19

YOu are joking about the name Lolita surely! The links between that name and paedophilia are very very strong in our culture - how any parent could chose it for their newborn is astounding. Maybe doesnt apply in Ecador though wouldn't know.

SomeGuy · 14/10/2009 14:36

Well quite: Lolita is pretty much a by-word for paedophilia and pornography.

When she gets older she'd be very much in demand as a porn star.

Don't shoot me but...I feel the same way about Lola, which is short for Lolita. Both are nicknames for Dolores, which basically means 'pain'.
So all things considered, I wouldn't go there.

Lulumama · 14/10/2009 15:41

I also read that story this morning and felt incredibyl sorry and also very angry for this woman. she needed psychiatric help of some sort.

not keen on the name lolita , although i can understand it being in honour of her grandmother, but the name is inextricably linked with paedophilia now.

i would not choose it for my DD

TakeLovingChances · 14/10/2009 20:07

I have a dear friend in Latvia (one of the Baltic states) who is called Lilita. She gets called Lil for short.

According to her Lilita is a very popular old name in Latvia, but she HATED being referred to as Lolita when she lived in UK for a few years!

MaggieBehaveOutGuising · 14/10/2009 20:12

I agree with someguy.

Addicted to abortions!????? Because she was rebellious??? well that really showed us/society/her husband didn't it??? Poor woman needs a few hours on the psychiatrists sofa.

MaggieBehaveOutGuising · 14/10/2009 20:13

I wouldn't consider Lola usable either. Definitely not on a birth cert.

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 14/10/2009 20:17

WAS there not something about argos bringing out a childrens bed called lolita and everyone went mad and it got removed?

sunshineonarainyday · 14/10/2009 20:21

Shane Richie has a daughter called Lolita, if I remember correctly.

girlsyearapart · 14/10/2009 20:23

am shooting you coco as my dd is called lola!

would not have lolita though.

and yes shane ritchie has got dd called lolita..

Heated · 14/10/2009 20:36

But Shane Richie (& presumably his wife) are either stupid in not realising the connotations or desperate to get their child some attention.

I happened to list Lolita along with Methuselah, Adolph, Myra as examples of names to avoid.

LolaAnn · 14/10/2009 20:37

Hi my name is Lola

Tidey · 14/10/2009 20:40

I think Lola's quite a nice name, but not Lolita. It sounds far too wanton.

Lola, is musically either a showgirl(Barry Manilow) or a tranvestite (The Kinks). So, not sure I would use it, even though it's lovely.

Lolita - no.
