Dora - too Explorer associated?

Looking at Flora and lots of other names too so it isn't our only option. Just wanted to check opinions on this first?

I taught a Dora in south east London - she'd be early-twenties by now I guess. I like it. But the Explorer thing might put a dampener on it.

Dora is very cute but I dont know - think it could be too explorer associated. That said, it could be just because I have a 4 year old dd who has been obsessed with Dora for the past 2.5 years, so it could be just my association ifykim?

Dora is lovely but I think it should be the short version of sthg longer, Theodora, Isadora.

Nah it I think it's fine. It's a lovely name.

Loads of names are associated with TV characters (Thomas the Tank Engine, Charlie and Lola etc) but although people might make the connection it doesn't put people off using them.

I love Theodora / Isadora too.

dora the explorer is only big with the under 5 set - a drop in the ocean in the lifetime of a name

I don't know.... I don't like it. But trying to put that aside, there are young barneys and jakes and maxes and rorys (racing car) and finleys... (fire engine)

I agree with Theadora or Isadora. Really leaves you with a few more options. I love Thea.

I think many people with young children will associated the name witht he prgramme, yes.

There is an Isadora in DD's school IIRR, alhough I think her nn is Issy not Dora.

I don't think it's an issue at all, most of the population have never heard of Dora the Explorer. ANd even if they have, it's no different to using Thomas or Lola. Go for it.

Wanted to consider it for both dcs, but got veteoed by DH on explorer grounds.

I see his point. I feel the programme is the same generation as my kids (and yours) and therefore the name has already been 'taken' by the TV series and my child would have to grow up with it. I wouldn't feel it was a no-no if the TV programme was from thirty years ago. In fact, dc2 has the same name as a popular children's TV series from when DH was a little boy.

I like it. And explorer is naff but generally positive - clever, brave, good map-reading skills.

It is DD's name, it rocks in my book!
