I don't like it though Edward is one of my favourite names. Reminds me of the one in lion witch and the waredrobe

TimothyTigerTuppennyTail · 30/09/2009 22:38

Blackadder!

NigellaTufnel · 30/09/2009 22:43

I know! Negative connatations. But Sir Edmund Hillary was pretty cool. as was Edmund Spencer.

Scraping the barrel?

I love it - am also a fan of Edwin

pranma · 30/09/2009 22:46

Edward is gorgeous and not too common I'm less keen on Edmund or Edwin

Parmageddon · 30/09/2009 22:47

I quite like it. It does sound a bit medieval, but would get shortened to Ed/Eddie anyway??

NigellaTufnel · 30/09/2009 22:49

I think it probably would get shortened, but I'm not too fussed, I would just like something a bit more unusual as his full name.

I think that it looks lovely as a written word as well.

I think it's great. But if your DH doesn't like it, that's not much use!

NigellaTufnel · 01/10/2009 10:08

To be frank, DH only likes two boys names, neither of which I am particularly keen on, and I have given him about 20 names and he has vetoed all of them.

However, I have a number of aces up my sleeve:

  1. I will have given birth after a knackering 9 months (hopefully) and
  2. We went for a slightly unusual choice for DS, DH was not convinced, and now absolutely loves the name.
  3. It could be a girl, and DH doesn't do girls names. Apart from vetoing them, of course.

I think Edmund is very nice.

cyteen · 01/10/2009 10:24

Edmund is so much nicer than Edward. Although I might be biased by having had a long and brilliantly life-changing relationship with an Edmund when I was in my teens.

SummerLightning · 01/10/2009 11:54

I have an Edmund! I love the name, and I don't really care about Blackadder/Lion witch and the Wardrobe.
He has been known to be called Captain Slackbladder by a friend of mine though (must stop that before he understands!)
lots of people didn't like it when we told them before he was born though (including my mum!)
General consensus seems to be that it is quite posh, not sure why though.
And people since he was born seem to say "Oh that's unusual is it a family name?", which I take to mean "Why on earth would you call a child that unless it was a family name". But I don't care!

bess23 · 01/10/2009 15:55

Love Edward not so keen on Edmund.

FaintlyMacabre · 01/10/2009 15:58

We have an Edward but I was rather tempted by Edgar as a variation. It sort of rhymes with our surname which is why we didn't use it.

oldspeckledtam · 01/10/2009 17:48

I considered Edmund but went with Edgar. It's fabulously underused, IMO.

janeite · 01/10/2009 17:52

I love, love, love Edmund..Did I mention that I think it's great?

TheFallenMadonna · 01/10/2009 17:53

Oh I like Edmund and always suggest it as an alternative to Edward.

janeite · 01/10/2009 17:53

Mansfield Park comes to mind before Narnia or Blackadder. Fab name but quite a drippy character.

Merle · 01/10/2009 18:56

LIke them all -Edmund, Edwin, Edgar. Go for it.

LittleMissWorryHead · 01/10/2009 19:20

Blackadder!!!!

NigellaTufnel · 01/10/2009 20:03

But Edmund Blackadder is pretty cool.

Edmund is a fab name!!!

I once taught a boy with this lovely name. The other children called him Eddie unless he did something outstanding and they would then almost chant in deep voices "Bravo Edmundo Bravo"!
