This has been vetoed, but I'm curious - Innes?

For a boy? This may be more relevant to Scottish MNers - DH doesn't like it as he thinks it's poncy, but is happy enough with other Scottish names (he's Scottish, and we live in Scotland). What do you think?

OMG Habbibu you have to have a Hector - I've had 3 girls so no wee Hector for me but you still could!!!

please please PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEAASSSEEEEEEEE not that I'm being needy or anything

nappyaddict · 23/09/2009 12:18

I love it

KleineMaus · 23/09/2009 12:32

I like Innes, although my first thought was of a girl as my mum taught one recently (although it was spelled Ynys!) I'm in Scotland though. A friend of a friend recently had a Murdo and I'm seriously contemplating a Magnus (although this is more Orcadian/Scandinavian probably). What are you going to go with if you don't mind me asking?

Oh, I've no idea what we'll go for yet. Hector a no-go, I'm afraid, dizzy - FIL's dog was called Hector. Would be weird. Though he was a very nice dog.

I will ask DH for his considered opinion of Pablo, hully, and post a verbatim response.

I'm not dead set on a Scottish name, btw - dd's isn't at all (though they do pronounce it differently here, which galls me). I was just curious to see if DH's ideas of poncy connotations were widespread. I should really have held back - didn't really come up with dd's name until after she'd been born, at which point I think dh would have agreed to anything.

I know a cute wee Innes and wish I had called DS3 Magnus (have some Orcadian roots so could have got away with it). Had to veto Rory as next door neighbours dog had the name first! plus DS3 was the only one of mine not born with red hair. I also like Gillies as a first name, bit like Innes?

nikki1978 · 23/09/2009 16:13

Well I like it but it is my surname (bit biased!) so I definitely would never use it . I am not normally fond of untraditional names but it is not a chavvy one so it passes my test

StrictlyAvadaKedavra · 23/09/2009 16:17

I know a 3yo and a late twenties Innes, I didn't like it at first as being English to me it was a girl's name, but it's really grown on me these last few years in Scotland

stressedHEmum · 23/09/2009 18:45

My Ds3 is called Innes, it is a family name and means Man from the Islands.

it isn't at all poncey or a girl's name. It is pronounced INN-es, and is most definitely a name for boys.

I knew an Innes in my teens. Funnily enough I didn't realise it was a Scottish name. I'm Scottish and live in Scotland by the way.

I think it's okay. Not the butchest of names.

I love Struan and Stuart.

I also love Duncan but remember thinking it was a bit ugly when Alf and Ailsa called their son Duncan in 'Home and Away' circa 1992.

FlouryBap · 23/09/2009 19:12

I LOVE Innes. It is Irish as well as Scottish . think it is super cool and am very sad my DH vetoed it as well

Pingpong · 23/09/2009 19:20

I really like the name Innes and I'm Scottish. I used to know a really nice one back in my uni days. I don't consider it poncy at all and I am have strong opinions on the ponce factor
I would have been Duncan if I'd been a boy - yuk TG I wasn't.
Scottish Innes is very different to Spanish Inez and definitely for boys.
Big thumbs down to Hector & Murdo from me but thumbs up to Magnus and Donnie/Donald

Kayzr · 23/09/2009 19:24

I quite like it. A scottish couple who live down my street had a little boy on Monday and he is called Innes Hector.

Umlellala · 23/09/2009 19:25

I love Lachlan, but not remotely Scottish so couldn't use it.

dogonpoints · 23/09/2009 19:31

I don't think it's poncey but I don't like the fashion of surnames as first names

Lemontea · 23/09/2009 19:44

Love it! I'm Welsh and live in Scotland and know a few blokes called Innes.
Strangely, they are all gorgeous hunks of men. Maybe there is something in a name.....

Habbibu · 23/09/2009 22:01

pointy, that's another of dh's objections. my argument is that they were first names first, and that apparently some are ok (eg. Fraser, Stewart), but some are not.

Habbibu · 23/09/2009 22:02

hully, dh's verbatim response to Pablo was a wry smile and zipped lips.

OP posts:
Habbibu · 23/09/2009 22:04

Ooh. We have a potential yes for Magnus!

OP posts:
girlsyearapart · 23/09/2009 22:08

My niece is Ines so it makes me think of girls not boys.

dogonpoints · 23/09/2009 22:10

habb, think of some other names. I'm sure we'll find a better one

Habbibu · 23/09/2009 22:13

Oh lordy no, pointy! I only put this to the test as it was pre-vetoed. No matter what we choose, someone on MN will have an acid comment to make, which will stick in my head everytime I'm yelling to get them to stop running into the road...
