Does a different spelling = chavvy???

You know what I mean, when you see some odd spelling of a 'normal' name just so that it looks 'special' but often ends up just looking ridiculous.

Am asking because the name Aidan is on my shortlist, but have also seen it spelt Aaden and Aedan, which I prefer to the traditional spelling.

What do you think of the alternative spellings?

Fibi anyone You just can't take people seriously after their parents have done that to them.

Aiden or Aidan

Febes · 27/09/2009 20:06

Do you think Anabel and Rueben are spelt wrong and look wrong??

scattykatty · 27/09/2009 20:11

Yes, not so much Anabel as they spell it like that in Spain but Rueben looks ridiculous!

scattykatty · 27/09/2009 20:16

Just watcing X factor... Danyl, Oh Good God!

Hulababy · 27/09/2009 20:21

Proper versions of names are fine. These maybe because of different country;s spellings or simply alternative spellings from over the years.

However, deliberately made up versions and misspellings are not fine IMO.

DD is Mollie. I prefer the look of that spelling to Molly, plus the older peoplle we know of had the spelling Mollie. So IMO Mollie is a perfectly valid version, despite being the least used version, of the name.

My DCs are Anabel and Rueben. They are alternative spellings for more common names. My DH and I are both from different countries and cultures (NZ and SA) so names are bound to be different. I'm not chavvy.

MrsSchadenfreude · 27/09/2009 23:15

But how do you know you're not chavvy? Even the chavviest of chavs wouldn't think they were chavvy. I've never heard anyone saying "I'm a right chav, me."

Ronaldinhio · 27/09/2009 23:19

dreadful, just dreadful

also apparently your child's name and how they spell it can directly affect things like job and university applications in the future

no reason to saddle them with a poor prejudgement before they start

TigerDrivesAgain · 27/09/2009 23:25

Anabel looks fine, isn't that how you spell it?

Reuben is fine but getting the u and the e the wrong way round is, er, a bit silly and as it's (er, isn't it) a biblical name, it ought to be shockproof. After all, we're all called "Revelations" aren't we?

serenity · 27/09/2009 23:35

FWIW Aydin/Ayden are completely unrelated Turkish names (Aydan is the feminine form) Not 'chavvy', just not standard British or Irish.

Bibithree · 27/09/2009 23:48

I know a Honi (Honey) which I think looks ridiculous and a bit chavvy tbh.
Aidan rocks, I love that name and that spelling.

nappyaddict · 28/09/2009 01:03

Where is Rueben from? I've seen Ruben (Dutch), Reuben, Ruuben (Finnish), Rouben (Greek), Rubin or Reubin.

simplesusan · 28/09/2009 09:00

I agree about it making the parents look thick.

I heard of a girl being called Wensdy, as in "Wednesday" it just made everyone think that her parents couldn't spell.

scattykatty · 28/09/2009 09:51

I just don't get it. I know a little girl called Anabelle, people always spell her name wrong and makes her Mother look silly for trying SO hard to be different. People will always spell it Annabel and Reuben naturally, or Honey or Wednesday so making it different just means a WHOLE lifetime of them saying, 'no actually I spell it like this'. All those names really just look like spelling mistakes over here

skihorse · 28/09/2009 10:18

nappyaddict It's Hebrew.

seeker · 28/09/2009 10:27

Rueben isn't an alternative spelling. If you google "Rueben", it asks you if you mean "Reuben"!

ermintrude13 · 28/09/2009 10:33

Micheal is Irish spelling, not wrong.

GingGangGillyGilly · 28/09/2009 10:39

Micheal (with fadas I can't do) is correct Irish spelling, pron mee-haul so maybe wasn't a mistake.

GingGangGillyGilly · 28/09/2009 10:40

Oh there you go that's how long it took me to read the thread.

nappyaddict · 28/09/2009 10:47

Sorry skihorse I meant that particular spelling of it.

MaggieVirgoLeo · 28/09/2009 10:52

I think it depends.

Eg, Jillian or Linzy, I would say no (rather than Gillian or Lindsay).

But something stupid just to be different, rather than to be more phonetic, then I would probably say yes.

MaggieVirgoLeo · 28/09/2009 10:58

Febes, Anabel looks Spanish, I wouldn't think you were chavvy with those name choices, but I'd think you were typing too faster than your brain iyswim!! Do you have to tell people "no it's not Reuben, it's Rueben". That'd would be like spelling John Jhon. Just

Swap those letters around!!

OP Aedan doesn't actually look wrong, but it looks like there are fadas missing. I'd stick with Aidan, as that is the Anglicised version which doesn't need any fadas or symbols.

smallone · 28/09/2009 11:03

Makes me think that the parents can't spell or couldn't be bothered to look it up in a baby name book! Ashlee, KC spring to mind. My mum worked in a primary school and she said alot of names are now being spelled phonetically rather than traditional spellings.

Although when I had dd, woman in neighbouring bed had dd with an unusual name and mws asked her to spell it and she couldn't! I wonder if some of these spellings are post birth brainfog induced!

FWIW I've had to spell my name out my whole life and its very boring and bog-standard, just got a few accepted spellings. (tis a fat girls name )

GrimmaTheNome · 28/09/2009 11:06

If the alternative spelling is normal in another country its absolutely fine (for instance Giorgina is a pretty alternative to Georgina). If the spelling is gratuitiously fabricated just to be different (or from ignorance) then its daft and annoying.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 28/09/2009 11:44

It's Baaaad. I met a woman who called her daughter Carmen. Lovely name, unusual, and she was half spanish so culturally appropriate as well. Until she told me she spelt it Karman 'to be different'. Why? Why? I didn't have the heart to tell her it should really be pronounced 'Car man'.
