What do you think of Boudica as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

We haven't decided whether to use this as a middle name or first. We'd love to know what the mumsnet jury think.

if this isn't a joke then ffs get back on the planet...

PuppyMonkey · 23/09/2009 09:29

I like Bodicea better. Controversial.

kathyis6incheshigh · 23/09/2009 09:30

I like it but would worry about the far-right adopting it as a popular name (British queen who attacks foreign invaders etc). [probably overthinking things emoticon]

Certainly interesting. But

(1) Why are some names 'Cornish' when Boudicca is 'British' (fears on here of BNP allusions) - surely either they are all 'British' or Boudicca is Icenae/Suffolk.

(2) Who on earth got to dictate the change from Bodacea to Boudicca? Surely all ancient names have several equally valid spellings/pronunciations in modern languages.

Yes go for it - at least you will have a real reason for your dd to hate you as a teenager rather than just the fact that you are breathing . Maybe to add a litle something extra, call her "Bidet" for short

Stannie · 23/09/2009 11:27

I love names that are unusual so I like it (I liked Persephone too though so perhaps I'm not the best person to ask ) I have an utterly mad name and never hated my parents for calling me it(any more than a normal teenager - the name was never an issue)

I don't live in London or the Home Counties fwiw.. or Salford ..

furrycat · 23/09/2009 11:30

Just don't. Please,

amtooyoungforthis · 23/09/2009 11:35

I would like to know when the pronunciation changed and why also

At school we learnt about Bodacea and now its Boudicca....why? When?

Avendesora · 23/09/2009 12:29

If you do use it make sure you spell it correctly!

kathyis6incheshigh · 23/09/2009 12:38

Someone decided there was a mistake in a manuscript wiki entry.
I think there are alternative spellings, Boudica is not wrong.

Hmm, the bit I lived in for 5 years wasn't a place for little Boudica

MadrasHouse · 23/09/2009 14:12

It's a bit over-used, don't you think? Almost common, tbh.

hulabula · 23/09/2009 14:32

I'd spell it Boudicca.

SausageRocket - I think Boudicia is a great name for a girl growing up in Salford, having a namesake known for the ability to ransack towns, mutilate invaders and attack the ruling authorities could be considered a positive advantage there!

4andnotout · 23/09/2009 21:57

We wished we had named dd2 Boudica, dp had joked about it when i was pregnant, but now we realise it would have really suited her and she could have been Bodie for short.
We live in the iceni area, and my bil actually found a boudica coin last week, so it would have been appropriate for the area.

fortyplus · 24/09/2009 00:20

I bet Hyacinth Bucket would name her daughter Boudicca...
Boudicaa Bucket - now that's what I call classy!

nooka · 24/09/2009 01:42

Boadicea is the Latinised version of Boudicca, so it seems more appropriate to use the Ancient Celtic and therefore original spelling/pronunciation. A bit of historical reclaiming I suppose. Ironically we only know about her because of Roman records.
