No no and no again I'm afraid (I'm only saying this to protect the poor child!)

ZZZenAgain · 21/09/2009 13:45

don't think you'd be setting a trend personally.

Hulababy · 21/09/2009 13:51

No, I don't like it as a first name. Smith is a surname.

loobylu3 · 21/09/2009 13:53

er, no- don't let hubby do it!

choccyp1g · 21/09/2009 13:55

I like it, but I think it needs a longish surname to sound right.

castille · 21/09/2009 13:57

No, don't. Your DH is mad. There are squillions of first names out there, why on earth choose a surname?

MollieO · 21/09/2009 13:58

Unless you are American and have roman numerals to add after the surname I think it is a no.

MadameCastafiore · 21/09/2009 13:58

Stupid!

doubleexpresso · 21/09/2009 14:43

Reminds me of 'Smithy' from Gavin & Stacey!

wheniwishuponastar · 21/09/2009 16:56

i kind of like it. But you've got to spell it Psmith!

TheHeadbangingWombat · 21/09/2009 18:01

Awful.

pranma · 21/09/2009 18:03

I like it.I had a teddy bear which I called Smith Fitzherbert[I grew up on a council estate but was pretentious]Smith was my mum's maiden name and I wish I had thought of it as a first name.

Bathsheba · 21/09/2009 18:23

I have to agree with the confusion in later years...

When I worked there was a guy in IT called (not actually but I don;t want to put his actual name so I'll use similar alternatives) Smith James

Almost all the emails he ever received started Hello James which was his surname.

Yes, in the grand scheme of things the addressing of letters isn;t a big deal and most people would get it right after the first time but it WOULD be annoying. I've spent my life spelling and pronouncing my name and it becomes really annoying, knowing that whenever you meet new people you'll need to explain it, and pronounce it and repeat it....most people get it after that first meeting, but its really annoying and it makes me dread new social situations sometimes.

pofacedandproud · 21/09/2009 18:24

It is a surname. What is it with this American thing using surnames as first names?

Squishabelle · 21/09/2009 18:33

Terrible. This is not a first name. Is your hubby losing the plot or something?

Knickers0nmahead · 21/09/2009 18:41

Oh god no.
