Anatole.

I'm not sure if I like it or not although it's certainly not 'usual'.

Any thoughts to help my views along?

Is it just a bit silly? It does remind me of Ptolemy who was on the architecture programme with Griff Rhys Jones (random muse).

i teach an anatole. he's from a v normal (outwardly!) family. is bit odd, but he's a pretty average kid.

HigherThanAWombat · 15/09/2009 13:33

I love it. I'd prefer it without the 'e' though. It looks a little more masculine then.

Acanthus · 15/09/2009 13:33

How is it pronounced? Does it rhyme with mole? Or sound a bit like anatomy?

shoobidoo · 15/09/2009 13:34

I know a little Anatole. His parents are Greek. I think its lovely!

I also like Ptolemy.

shoobidoo · 15/09/2009 13:36

Yes, Anatol or Anatolio might sound more masculine. They're variants of Anatole (according to wikipedia).

frogthistle · 15/09/2009 13:40

The boy's name Anatole is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "break of day".

Some babyname website I found on google gives the pronunciation as either Ana-tol or A-nato-le. Think I prefer the first one & that is what the chap this morning was called.

Anatolia is a region of Turkey, east of Greece. There's a French novelist Anatole France.

Anatole has 8 variant forms: Anatol, Anatolio, Anatoly, Antal, Antol, Antole, Antolle and Antoly.

Hmmm, I thiiiiink I like this. Not sure it would go with our (non-greek) mediterranean surname though.

Reminds me of Aunt Dahlias fantastic chef in the Jeeves and Wooster books and i cannot shake that however hard i try!
'Tis OK though.

frogthistle · 15/09/2009 13:42

Does 'Anatol' look like a form of painkillers though?

may be dwelling on this too much...

I think that it's also used in Russia.

HigherThanAWombat · 15/09/2009 13:43

I don't think it does. It's lovely. Use it please.

Pleaseee.

I've just remembered the lovely, and very gorgeous Russian waiter that used to work in one of my favourite restaurants. That was his name.

frogthistle · 15/09/2009 13:52

Will run it past DH, after this. He will probably have his own ideas .

We liked Loic last time (before DD2 born, obv), he might go for this.

DH did once suggest Derek just to warn you.

He's not from round here...

HigherThanAWombat · 15/09/2009 14:15

Derek?

If he doesn't like it I'd ignore it. Clearly the man is slightly unhinged and incapable of choosing a baby name. It's your responsibility alone.

deepdarkwood · 15/09/2009 14:19

Like it - and prefer spelling with e
