Hello - can I guage opinion on Oscar? I really like it, but feel I am hearing it everywhere these days. Is it "on the up"?

Millions around here. Usually naughty wee chaps.

I really like Felix, but not Oscar. Oscar is a great name for a little scottie dog though.

DS is 13 and an Oscar.
So one of the first in the new wave.
Very cool name.

I think it's a brilliant name - but I would wouldn't I!

Four years ago when we were waiting for DS to arrive we told my Mum we were planning to call him Oscar - "Oh Yes! - What are you really going to call him?" was her reply, but she's got used to it since then. We also told DW's Mum who said "We used to have a dog called Oscar - he was nice."

He's the only one in his pre-school here in Derby but I suspect he'll have plenty of company when we move to Cambridge in the next few months.

Only one Oscar in my Dcs school, he is a lovely well mannered and behaved boy.

funwithfondue · 24/09/2009 16:42

It's my dog's name - suits him to the ground, great for shouting across the fields too. (He also was a Wilde dog).

Would work equally well for a human I'm sure, although I think it's very old, bearded man. (Don't know any living Oscars personally).

pigleychez · 24/09/2009 16:48

I used to teach an Oscar. He was a sweet, shy little boy.. never any trouble.- Although his mum would disagree!

I like the name but depends on it popularity in your area.

cityangel · 25/09/2009 00:04

Eastenders using it = more popular

hmc · 25/09/2009 00:12

I know a 5 year old Oscar. He is fun, naughty, cheeky and rather charismatic - an usual characteristic in a 5 year old. Consequently I like the name

onebatmother · 25/09/2009 00:19

Oh yes it's very lovely.

We have one, nearly 8. Prob would think twice now though - several in school esp in years below.

We call him Oz quite a lot.

ohnelly · 25/09/2009 13:14

Love it, but there are quite a few around now

lucky1979 · 25/09/2009 23:45

It makes me think of a dog's name.

I know two of them though and they are gorgeous little boys so I'm losing the dog association slowly. It's definitely pretty popular around here, seem to be lots about!

herethereandeverywhere · 26/09/2009 23:57

Lovely name but v.popular. 3 different people we know have all called their sons Oscar this year.

Woofie · 29/09/2009 22:57

I've got one too... Had never met another Oscar when we chose it 4 years ago, but I understand it's all the rage down south. Don't care though - only know 1 other little Oz up here in YOrk and I still love the name and it suits ds to a tee

simplesusan · 30/09/2009 09:21

It's not popular here, I only know one.
Agree about it sounding like a cat's name though-sorry!

honeydew · 30/09/2009 13:51

I like Oscar. very much. I was going to call my son that but my DH wasn't so keen.

My cat is called Oscar instead but I don't associate it with pets but I DO think of Oscar Wilde . But that is ok and it's a lovely classic name.

pluto · 30/09/2009 13:57

Great name. Was high on list for DS2 but in the end decided that there are so many of 'em round here down south that we would leave it.
