.....for a girl??

I know this is another spelling for Rory which I know is a boys name but I came across it in my baby names book last night for a girl and I'm thinking it's actually really nice.

What do you think? x

Um, I think it's a boys name, which will make things complicated for her.

rubyslippers · 14/09/2009 13:58

boys name

allaboutme · 14/09/2009 13:59

It is a boys name spelt wrong

flyingcloud · 14/09/2009 14:05

It's the Gaelic spelling, it's not wrong! Although it's a more anglicized version of the true Gaelic. Fwiw, I went to school with a girl called Rory, different...

allaboutme · 14/09/2009 14:07

I know its not wrong but most people will think its a 'creative' spelling of Rory, the boys name

bellissima · 14/09/2009 14:09

Try Romy, Rhona, Rhiannon, Romilla, Rita, Ruby...

thedollshouse · 14/09/2009 14:11

Love it for a boy but absolutely hate it for a girl. I should say it is our top name if we have a boy although we would spell it Rory. I really hate it when people start using boys names for girls. We have a Finley and I hear that this name is becoming more popular for girls.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 14/09/2009 14:12

I would not use it for a girl unless you think she won't mind spending her whole life having people mistake her for a member of the opposite sex.

OrmIrian · 14/09/2009 14:14

Sorry it just makes me think of the Archers. It will always be mispronounced or misspelt.

LadyPinkofPinkerton · 14/09/2009 14:14

Its a boys name and spelt incorrectly for the gaelic way too. It should be Ruariadh.

weegiemum · 14/09/2009 14:15

I like it, but not for a girl!

It means "Red Haired King".

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 14/09/2009 14:16

LadyPink - that is the Scottish form, but it is Ruari in Ireland.

MrsBadger · 14/09/2009 14:16

even misspelt this way (the Gaelic afaik is Ruadrih) it's still a boy's name

Name her Rhian, Rhianna, Roxanne, Roxanna, Romilly, Rosemary, or indeed anything, and call her Rory at home

Or how about Victoria / Tori? Laurie? Laura?

MrsBadger · 14/09/2009 14:17

(you see, even I can;t spell the Gaelic and I went to school with one)

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 14/09/2009 14:18

You went to school with a Gaelic? Is that a variant of Gail?

BalloonSlayer · 14/09/2009 14:19

I know someone who has a BOY spelled like that and he has all but given up and started spelling it Rory as everyone else does.

Rory is a boy's name.

weegiemum · 14/09/2009 14:22

You are all wrong ... you mean Ghaidhlig!

(I snuck away and read it off a school newsletter as despite the fact mykids go to a Gaelic school I cannot spell Ghaidhlig without checking!)

squeaver · 14/09/2009 14:23

Nice boy's name. Dd would have been Rory if she'd been a boy.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 14/09/2009 14:24

Or an Gaeilge if you are Irish of course.

deepdarkwood · 14/09/2009 14:24

Depends what happens to the Archers character (who is a boy...)

squeaver · 14/09/2009 14:35

Do you think he'll have a sex change, ddw? Now that would be a first in Ambridge!

nighbynight · 14/09/2009 14:36

Lovely name, but do your innocent child a favour and don't give her a boy's name.

OhBuggerandArse · 14/09/2009 15:19

Ruairi (Irish) or Ruairidh (Scottish GAelic), just to get that straight. And Gaidhlig doesn't have an h at the beginning unless lenited for some grammatical reason, like having bun-sgoil in front of it which is a feminine noun. Pedant's corner, anyone?

OhBuggerandArse · 14/09/2009 15:19

PS, is a rubbish name for a girl, everyone will think you are American and know no better.

mathanxiety · 14/09/2009 16:51

Yes, regrettable American trend, very . Also ignores the name's meaning, so you come across as a wannabe Irish...
