Ollie or Olly?

Love the name Oliver. Usual shortened version of Oliver seems to be Ollie but I prefer Olly. Any opinions?

Neither.Really wet middle England Daily Mail sort of name.

Doesn't matter, it's only a nickname, spell it how you like, but put Oliver on the birth certificate. He might go with Oli, he might call himself Bob, who knows?

squeaver · 08/09/2009 22:26

The 2 Olivers I know are Oli when shortened

Notalone · 08/09/2009 22:31

That was helpful Moondog Why do you have to be so rude?

My DS is Oliver but usually gets shortened to Ollie. However Olly and Oli are lovely too. I would go with Pasturesnew suggestion of naming him Oliver and letting him decide whether he wants to shorten it and if so what to shorten it too.

KAEKAE · 09/09/2009 14:11

We have an Oliver and we never shorten his name, but I have been known to write Oli on things.

there's a bloke my hubby works with who spells it olie ... slightly pretentious imho ... but i prefer ollie over olly

The Olivers I know have shortened their names to Oli.

flowerybeanbag · 09/09/2009 17:44

My youngest brother is Oliver but is an Olly.

LunarSea · 09/09/2009 18:10

Our Oliver chooses "Ollie" for a short version - though mostly he seems to stick with his full name except when he's playing football. I guess having less syllables is easier when you're shouting it across a football pitch.

sobloodystupid · 09/09/2009 20:47

Ollie, and I think it's a lovely name...

Clary · 09/09/2009 20:50

who knows?

One of DS2's best pals is Oliver, often known as Ollie, but I have never seen it written down.

Yes, most often shouted across the footie pitch

Tillyscoutsmum · 09/09/2009 20:50

I know two Olivers - one is Ollie, the other is Olly. I believe the latter's dad is a big rugby fan and chose the spelling after Olly Barclay

Disenchanted3 · 09/09/2009 20:52

Ollie, I read Olly as oily.

mazzystartled · 09/09/2009 20:58

We have an Ollie. Occasionally an Ols.

(And I am a woolly liberal Guardian reader.)

Why do people plan nicknames?

CPtart · 31/01/2017 19:35

Oliver is ok. Don't like contrived nicknames either. I'd stick with the name in its enterity.

Dolwar · 31/01/2017 20:59

I personally hate using the shortened version on a bc. It is very lower class where I live top do that.
