What do we think of Hebe?

I saw it in a newspaper and thought it was lovely. MIL hates it, though my mum thinks it's nice. What do you think?

Its lovely.

I love Hebe. I will warn you, though, that when it comes up on American boards a fairly high proportion of the posters read it as a racial slur against Jewish people (pronounced "heeb" in that case, though, I think) and are that anyone would consider naming a child that. Once the name was explained no one minded, but it did put me off as if DD were to visit the US I'd hate her to be provoking that kind of first impression with her name.

choosyfloosy · 08/09/2009 10:22

Yes, but that doesn't put Americans off calling their sons Randy does it?

It's simple, classical and unusual - a rare combo. I wouldn't use it myself but think it's a good choice.

PortAndLemon · 08/09/2009 10:29

Mmm, but Randy is just sniggerworthy. If you met someone named, say, Paki, you'd be less likely to snigger (or at least I would).

PortAndLemon · 08/09/2009 10:30

(I still haven't entirely given up on Hebe, in the relatively unlikely event that we have another DD, though)

fanjolina · 08/09/2009 10:32

Love it

PortAndLemon · 08/09/2009 10:32

(I could always give her WhichIsACharacterFromClassicalMythologyActuallyAndNotARacistSlur as a middle name, I suppose... )

GooseyLoosey · 08/09/2009 10:33

It's a plant - that's all I think when I hear it. I don't think "name" at all.

bronze · 08/09/2009 10:36

Or I'mnotracistI'meducated

I like it but you might find a lot of people dont know how to say it

Its a pretty plant and means youth I think which is nice

pinkthechaffinch · 08/09/2009 10:37

I really like this name and wanted to call dd3 it - unfortunately dh didn't agree (heeby jeebies was his comment I'm afraid) and we ended up calling her Phoebe instead.

I still really love it though!

traceybath · 08/09/2009 12:35

I love it

fiver · 08/09/2009 12:36

KnickersandVests · 08/09/2009 12:45

seeker · 08/09/2009 12:52

LOTS of people won't be able to pronounce it.

skyward · 09/09/2009 15:27

A mixed bag of responses - but thanks for offering your opinions.

If you don't know how to pronounce it, you would probably say Heeb.

tummytickler · 10/09/2009 10:21

I know 3 Hebes age 11, 8 and toddler and have known one of them for 8 years and still have to stop myself from calling her Hebe Jeeby as a nn (i tend to add on a bit, my ds is Eli Beelie for eg!)
Which is a shame as it is lovely.
I prefer Veronica tbh - and know a lovely little one of those too - and i think Ronnie is quite a cool nn.
