don't like the name we chose!

i had my baby 6 weeks ago and i don't like the name i've given her anymore: Willow. her father chose it not me and i don't like it because

  1. it has no substence or strength(he hates 'classy' names like Valentina)
  2. it sounds too girly and soft - which to be honest aren't things i personally value but that's just me.
  3. I can't imagine a judge or a minister with this name (she should at least have aspirations lol.)
  4. It's becoming trendy and popular
  5. it doesn't sound great with the surname
  6. it means nothing to me, it's just a tree.

Other names i considered were:
Haydee - hay-day
Valentina
Anastasia
Regan - ree-gan
Phoenix
Eugenie yoo-jay-nee
Emma
Blaise
Skye
Iona
Sophia - pronounced sof-eye-a
Seren
Aurora
Sapphira
Sasha

Only Anastasia, Valentina and Sophia, sorry. I have to say, I think Willow has its good points -- tree names evoke an image of strength for me, and in the case of Willow, I have always seen it as the name of a serene and calm person. It's also a graceful name, and very feminine. I don't necessarily associate it with lack of gravitas therefore.

Sophia (and yes - your pronounciation!), Emma or Sasha - lovely. And not too overly 'classy-formal' or elaborate .

(Although Willow is quite pretty too, but you must do what will ultimately work for you and DH).

jellybeans · 05/09/2009 09:22

Willow is nice and also Skye, Emma and
Iona.

IsItMeOr · 05/09/2009 09:30

Well I like Willow, although would not choose it myself. I do think it is simple and beautiful. Disagree that it is not a strong name - trees are very strong.

But then I think most of the names on your alternative list are pretty naff, particularly Haydee (which nobody is ever going to know if supposed to be pronounced hay-day), Regan, Phoenix (that's a boys' name isn't it?), Blaise (horse), Seren (boy),
Aurora (only if she's a fairytale princess),
Sapphira (only if she's a vampire or mills and boon heroine).

For the rest:
Valentina (only if you've got italian family connections)
Anastasia (okay)
Eugenie (pretentious)
Emma (nice, normal name)
Skye (pretty name, are you Scottish?)
Iona (again, pretty, are you Scottish?)
Sophia (okay)
Sasha (okay)

Willow is lovely. Why does it have to be a name associated with a 'professional'??

IsItMeOr · 05/09/2009 10:14

Sorry, just realised that might be more brutal honesty that you needed .

MaggieVirgo · 05/09/2009 10:19

Did he not like Skye? That's quirky,, and it's got the foundation/history of being Scottish and so on.

Willow is not my taste. But that's beside the point.

Saskia with Sasha for short, that might overlap your tastes a little.

Something like Lois, which is quirky but an old classic..........?

I'm sure there IS a name that is in the overlap of your two names

MaggieVirgo · 05/09/2009 10:25

scroll through this list

classic eccentric from name nerds

I saw a few good ones in there, proper names but not conventional. things like Hazel, Dulcie, Gaia ..

go through this list together??

If it helps my dd is willow and she is blonde and willowy, everywhere we go people comment on her name and how beautiful it is. She is nearly 6 so I think I started a trend!!

I don't worry about her being a profesional with her name because what does it matter. If she succeeds in life it won't be because or not because of her name. I actually think it will have the opposite effect , it will make her C.V stand out because it is unusual

We chose it because it was different but not silly and I love it.

oops

bishboschone · 05/09/2009 17:33

noy sure it will be much help but if I have another dd her name will be Misty..Can't see that helping you much.

P.s I am not a hippy and DH has a very middle class proffesion.

belgo · 05/09/2009 17:37

I like the name Willow. It doesn't strike me as being overly feminine at all, it's not an especially girly name.

deste · 05/09/2009 21:32

I think Willow is lovely. I used to feel a bit self concious (sp) using my DDs name at the start but she suits her name as I'm sure yours does.

nooki · 05/09/2009 21:39

If your partner and/or you have doubts about dd's name, then now is the time to consider changing it.

If it helps, my personal favourites from your list are

Valentina
Anastasia
Sophia
Emma

But, at the end of the day, you and your partner have to be happy with your choices!

scattykatty · 06/09/2009 10:27

Willow is a lovely name!

Firawla · 06/09/2009 11:44

I would stick with it if i was you, as people mentioned some doubts can be normal. Its a nice name, and surely you did like it when u agreed to it? you will get used to it i think

logi · 06/09/2009 18:32

willow is a lovely name.

audley · 06/09/2009 20:23

Wilhelmina, Willa for short

KERALA1 · 07/09/2009 15:54

Willow is pretty although there was a girl at school named this who was ahem anything but willowy. People did snigger behind her back when this poor dumpy girl had to say her name was Willow which to most conjures up images of a willowy figured type.

Andthentherewerethree · 07/09/2009 16:04

i'm not keen on the name we gave my dd2 now. shes only a few days oldm so will give it a bit more time, but i think it is quite normal to have doubts. its a big responsibility namign a child imo.
