Thoughts anyone? I think it's lovely - traditional but underused and not twee

A niggling feeling tells me it is a little masculine though

It is a name much loved by nuns, not at all masculine!

BonsoirAnna · 04/09/2009 13:38

Brigid

ninedragons · 04/09/2009 13:42

Like it, but I work with one and everyone calls her Bridge.

If that doesn't bother you, it's lovely.

MakemineaGandT · 04/09/2009 13:47

BonsoirAnna - yes but that will straight away lead to taunts of "Frigid Brigid" won't it?!

I doubt it - I know several Brigids and they never get taunted.

MakemineaGandT · 04/09/2009 13:52

hmmm.....but I guess they are not in the UK? Brigid isn't an English spelling...is it? (German I think?)

Americans

nooki · 04/09/2009 13:54

The German (and French) spelling is Brigitte, which I much prefer!

BonsoirAnna · 04/09/2009 13:55

Birgit

MakemineaGandT · 04/09/2009 13:57

ok, you're putting me off now. Brigid, Birgit....yuk...!

Brigid is the Irish spelling. It might make you think 'frigid' but only from the way it looks on paper. You would pronounce it with an '....et' sound at the end. Biddy is an old fashioned Irish nn for Brigid, btw. (hence 'old biddy'...)

mathanxiety · 04/09/2009 15:05

Forgot to add I love the name and think Biddy is a sweet nn. Not too masculine, imo.

belgo · 04/09/2009 15:07

Prefer Bernadette

MrsBadger · 04/09/2009 15:43

I like it

pretty but not frilly (cf Helen, Rachel etc)

Doozie · 04/09/2009 17:10

I love the name Bridget! Probably because I grew up with two friends called Bridget and they rock! They are called Bridie mostly which is cute.

I love it - it's my mum's name (in fact her middle name is Bernadette belgo). Unusual but not at all wacky.

She was Biddy at school (which was a Convent school so lots of Irish, although the Irish family always called her Bridget or Bridge).
She now likes to be called Granny Bridge by her GCs.

vanloadtovenice · 04/09/2009 18:46

We know a Biddy - 4- not sure if she's bridget. Could you go Bunty for shortening, and would you dare!

ButtercupWafflehead · 04/09/2009 18:52

Really really like it, but DH overruled me.

MaggieVirgo · 04/09/2009 18:55

No. I just hear the word "saint" hanging in the air before it.

Biddy, the seemingly mandatory nn for Bridget is even worse.

KembleTwins · 04/09/2009 18:57

My sis is Bridget. We call her Bridge. Some of her friends called her Briggy at school. She's never been a Bridie. She was the only one in our school, and I don't know any others.

millenniumfalcon · 04/09/2009 18:59

i think it's lovely, my only association is swallows and amazons .

piscesmoon · 04/09/2009 19:05

I don't like Biddy.

BrigitBigKnickers · 04/09/2009 19:07

Definitely!

happywomble · 04/09/2009 19:25
