Bit of a farcical one here. I'm experiencing an ongoing family saga at the moment and it all relates to the names which my sister in law intends to give her twin boys, who are due in 2 months. She proudly announced last week that she intends to call them Ronnie and Reggie . The entire family is horrified. She thinks the name combination, coupled with her surname is "lovely".

Naturally we're all really concerned by the prospect that the children will be taunted at school. No one appears to be able to get through to her though. I've tried diplomacy, but really, am now beginning to wonder whether I should reinforce this a little more vigorously with her.

Any thoughts and ideas welcome!

ps the rest of the family is quite well balanced, well my side is anyway.

That's fantastic - maybe you could start with showing her some pictures of the truly horrific stuff the brothers were responsible for and see if she's still convinced!

purepurple · 31/08/2009 08:38

Do you think that maybe she is just winding you all up?
Maybe you could suggest Burke and Hare instead, see what she says

Deemented · 31/08/2009 08:44

I went to a softplay a few weeks ago and there were twin girls there called Dolce and Gabbana.

TBH, it sounds like your sister might be winding you guys up.

But if she's not, well.. then thats her lookout really, isn't it? Nothing got to do with you - they are her children and she can name them however she chooses.

Jayp1ckle · 31/08/2009 09:04

I'll be delighted if this is a wind-up. Unfortunately she has quite a fascination for all things criminal. To my knowledge she hasn't become pen friends with any convicted criminals yet, but It wouldn't put it past her. She's very naive at times.

Purepurple, I may try that . Had the twins been a girl and boy, I shudder to think what names she would have shortlisted. Bonnie and Clyde?

A family member recently had twin girls and for months she said she was going to call them Mable and Myrtle. We were horrified! Anyway it turned out she was kidding when she revealed their REAL names which were Sophie and Aleisha!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 31/08/2009 09:11

Deemented - that has to be a wind up?! It shouldn't be allowed.

edam · 31/08/2009 09:13

I wish registrars were allowed to stop parents who clearly haven't thought it through... fingers crossed she is having you on.

mumzy · 31/08/2009 09:24

I've got a friend who's son is called Reggie and within minutes of being born one of the drs said to her "oh! as in the Krays". She was horrified but it was a family name and they had announced it well before the birth so they were stuck with it. I'd just let the hospital staff pass comment that might change her mind!.

MANATEEequineOHARA · 31/08/2009 09:40

STOP HER!!!

It sounds like a name for twin English Bull terriers.

Awful.

mrswee · 31/08/2009 09:59

MANATEEequineOHARA - You hit the nail on the head- I actually know a guy who has two English bull terriers called Ronnie and Reggie!

Now if they were cats that would be more amusing!

MamaLazarou · 31/08/2009 10:16

She is winding you up. I have told my mum I am calling the baby Morrissey or Jezebel.

MrsVik · 31/08/2009 10:30

If she's not winding you up, I'd suggest that she pictures the reaction those kids have when they are older and realise who their mum named them after.

That would screw a kid up pretty badly I think...

GoldenSnitch · 31/08/2009 10:35

I knew a couple who were big into Sci-Fi and Fantasy etc. When pregnant with thier only child, they told and convinced his Mum that if the baby were a boy, it was going to be called Merlin. There was a similar, fantasy characters name for a girl but I've forgotten what it was.

Because the fantasy stuff was such a huge part of thier lives (house filled with dragon figurines etc) his Mum believed them and spent the last couple of months of the pregnancy biting her lip not to tell them how awful the name was.

Apparently the relief on her face when the child arrived and they announced that his name was Rhys was fantastic

If she is a big crime fan then it is probably a wind up...

southernbelle77 · 31/08/2009 10:40

I doubt by the time they reach the playground that kids would have any idea who Ronnie and Reggie Kray were anyway!

Still, wouldn't do it and would seriously think she was winding you up!!

weegiemum · 31/08/2009 10:43

There are apocryphal twins in Glasgow called Armani and Versace.

Can you imagine that in the accent (I live here!!!)

Aaaaarrrr maaaaa -eeeeeee! Vuuuuurrr-saaaach-ayyyy! Cum infurr yurrr teee!

Eeek

Must be a wind up!

mrswee · 31/08/2009 22:31

lol!

KAEKAE · 31/08/2009 22:51

Scary....but then having you tell her what she should name her kids might only make her want to name them that all the more!

noddyholder · 31/08/2009 22:54

There was a woman on teh bus the other day with a small baby in her arms and she was called Pat!

foxytocin · 31/08/2009 22:57

Ahem. I know a Merlin.

Are you sure she knows what the Krays did?

Clary · 01/09/2009 00:19

I told everyone that DS1 was going to be called Fidel (as in Castro, bit of a hero here).

Actually quite like it now

SOrry OP, I agree Ronnie and Reggie is not good, but presuming she is aware of the associations, and you have tried to dissuade her, there's not much more you can do.

Maybe she is joking?

(fruitysunshine I quite like Mabel and Myrtle actually )

Tidey · 01/09/2009 00:29

Jeez, I really hope she's not serious. Apart from the extremely negative connotations, which are dreadful, it's rather twee anyway to have twins with names beginning with the same letter, or that are a 'pair' of names. Even worse if they rhyme. Eek.

GoldenSnitch · 01/09/2009 07:15

I knew of I mentioned the name someone would know one!!

No offense intended.

Friends mother was very pleased they picked something else though.
