that's rubbage Soupy

how do you know your child won't be an extrovert type who LIKES unusual names and the attention they command, and would resent you for calling them Jane or Jack?

yes, the child will have to live with it

the child will have to live with all sortsd of things that annoy him/her - that's life

a child's name is a parent's choice and people should choose what they feel happy with, not what they think will make it easier for the child to blend in with the school furniture

SoupDragon · 25/08/2009 15:03

Exactly how is it rubbish? The simple fact is that you are naming your child and it is them who have to live with the name. It's not to do with blending in with the school furniture, what a ridiculous thing to say, it's about taking the time to consider the child you are naming before you do it.

You shouldn't call them Arsey Poo-bum Smythe just because you like it.

GreensleevesFlouncedLikeAKnob · 25/08/2009 15:06

but you haven't met the child you are naming

you are projecting your personality and your preferences onto the child even more than a parent who calls him/her an unusual name just because they like it!

pasturesnew · 25/08/2009 15:13

I like Daphne and prefer Seraphina to Seraphine. Pearl is nice but if it's already in your group of friends I wouldn't use it.

GreensleevesFlouncedLikeAKnob · 25/08/2009 15:16

"what a ridiculous thing to say"

Quite so. Almost as ridiculous as a woman in her mid-thrities still nursing a grudge because her parents gave her a name that rhymed

BalloonSlayer · 25/08/2009 15:27

To me the only one that doesn't have "Auntie" in front of it is Seraphine, and that's because it was what someone's horse was called in a book of my childhood. (We really loved the name Gloria but couldn't get past the "Auntie" hurdle.)

I have a friend who was nearly called Pearl - she tells the tale with much hilarity at her narrow escape.

TheFallenMadonna · 25/08/2009 15:30

Had I been a boy I would have been Colin, and I feel much the same way...

MrsBarbaraKingstanding · 25/08/2009 19:51

You have to presume that everyone calls their baby their chsosen name with the best of intentions (unless they do call them scumbag shitface) either thinking 'it's nice to have something unusual I wish I did' or 'it's nice to have something taditional with gravitas I wish I did' etc etc.

Same thibnking-'it's nice they'll thank me for this'-but a different view of what's good.

Everyone does call their baby what they want whether it's Emily or Eustacia.

tummytickler · 25/08/2009 20:07

My dd is Pearl (as i mentioned earlier in the post), and i certainly did not give her the name to make me 'achingly cool' or whatever, and i dont believe that anybody does that.
she is 4 now, loves her name (except when she wishes she was named Shirley), fits with her peers without having to be identified as 'Pearl with the blonde hair' or 'Pearl H'.
What is wrong with using a nice classic name, that is underused? the same for Daphne.
Tbh, whist Seraphine is not wondeful, i would rather be called Seraphine than the horribly dull, no1 girls name in the year i was born one thata i have been lumbered with.

Horton · 25/08/2009 20:15

I like Pearl a lot and also Seraphine. Not keen on Daphne which sounds a bit wet to me.

Surely any parent is imposing their choice on a child? Even if you call your kid Jane or Emma or Grace or Rose or whatever happens to be the most usual name in their year, you're still imposing your tastes. Who knows, they might rather have been called Banana or Hephzibah.

cheesesarnie · 25/08/2009 20:16

i love pearl

gagamama · 26/08/2009 10:03

Pearl is the best of those. Daphne is not quite 'old' enough yet - the ones I know are only in their early 60s. It's a throwback name rather than a vintage one. And Seraphine sounds like a nice name for a unicorn.

MrsMattie · 26/08/2009 11:09

Seraphine, although prefer Seraphina.
Daphne is unspeakably bad.
Pearl's pretty horrid, too.

sausagesupper · 26/08/2009 11:11

pearl if made to choose, but prefer neither

bamboobutton · 26/08/2009 11:15

love love love Seraphine!

it's top of my list for girls names, if i ever have a girl.

loobylu3 · 26/08/2009 21:42

I like your names justbeen! I think Daphne is gorgeous. I love Pearl too although I would say it is less of a classic. I would disagree with one poster who thinks they are 'achingly cool'. They are perfectly good names but just not the most commonly heard so they sound strange to some people.
Less keen on Seraphine but certainly don't actively dislike it.

justbeenforapromenade · 28/08/2009 05:30

I find some of the above comments wildly amusing. I am obviously a conscientious human being of sound mind looking for a classically gorgeous name (Daphne is possibly the least trad, only making its appearance in the 20th century). My first dd is Violet, which is perfect for her as she is the only one we know and she is a gorgeous, gregarious little girl. I would personally never wish to saddle my child with a name in the top 10 - I think my child might resent me for it and want something a little individual. Not necessarily outlandish to the tune of Moondog Wolfchild.

Seraphine has come to grow on me of late, and feel it follows the zeitgeist ( the spirit of the times) very traditional with a French feel (like Valentine, Clementine).

Any more suggestions for a future dd's name? I am now newly preg after recent m/c so like to assuage any worries by dreaming up names!

Already chosen name if a boy.

I love the french names Dalphine, Celeste, Anaïs and Vivienne.

Seraphine also lovely.

belgo · 28/08/2009 07:00

Delphine I mean!

All the best with this pregnancy.

belgo · 28/08/2009 07:02

Also Adrienne.

FairLadyRantALot · 28/08/2009 07:32

Seraphina, rather than Seraphine, I think...I know a Seraphina, she was the sister of my very first Placement ward when I did my nursing training, and she was well respectable...certainly no airhead...

Daphne, a wonderful lovely neighbour of mine, I quite like the name

Pearl could be pretty, but sadly my bys are spngebob fans...and pearl will forever be Mr. Crabs Daughter, who is for some reason a whale....sorry

Tinfoil · 28/08/2009 10:05

Pearl.

IveGotHamButImNotAHamster · 28/08/2009 10:50

Daphne

LouMacca · 28/08/2009 11:50

I don't like any of the names but if it HAS to be one of them I would be Seraphine.

Daphne and Pearl both awful imo.
