Need a boy's name that either doesn't shorten easily or shortens to two syllables...help please!!

Ok so we have found out we're having a boy but really struggling to find a name we both like...I like quite traditional names, but DP shortens everything I suggest!!

Eg. I like the name Jacob, and fully accept that he would probably be called Jake at school etc, but would like to keep name as Jacob for as long as possible...but DP says that he would call him Jake from day of birth and only ever call him Jacob for emphasis (eg. Jacob dont do that, lol)

Help!!

Only name we both kind of like is Alexander shortened to Alex, but whilst I dont mind this it doesn't make me go 'wow'

DP also has the annoying habit that practically every name I suggest, he replies "No, i knew someone at school/work/where I lived etc called that and didnt like him" tried to suggest that once our baby is called that he'll think of our son where he hears the name but he's not having it!!

But any suggestions gratefully welcomed, then I can put them to DP to see if they pass his negative associations barrier!!

Thanks!

Ooooh I like James, and DP would no doubt "shorten" to Jamie which I love...will definitely suggest that tonight

Have already suggested Adam but he doesn't like that, can't remember why! Jack & Elliott are my cousins names so can't really use them.

Will suggest Laurence & Hugh but dont think DP will like them - he doesn't seem to like names that he deems too traditional or 'posh', altho not sure how he decides which names fall into those categories!!

Tobias with nn Toby was one of the few names that we'd both agreed on...but then DP started going on that because Tobias would be on the birth certificate but we'd call him Toby most of time that would mean that Tobias would be his nickname & Toby his real name! his warped logic annoyed me so much at the time that it kind of put me off the name!!! will try to re-consider it tho

Lots of the other suggestions either we have close relatives with the same name (Michael, Henry, Oliver, Ben) or DP has rejected for some unknown reason! (Malachi, Isaac, Owen) plus DP has dyslexia so have to avoid names that are difficult to spell...aaagh, why is it so difficult to decide?!

With DD I was single so got to decide on the name by myself, much easier!!

Thanks for all your suggestions tho, I do now have some new names to suggest to DP tonight

Oooh - I quite like 'Loz' !

I wouldn't worry too much about the shortening thing - as long as you and DH don't mind calling your ds different names. In our case it was the other way around - I liked the short versions, DH liked the 'proper' names. In the end we went with one that he liked the long version of and I liked the short version of - but neither of us liked the opposite (iykwim).

In the event when I saw ds he just didn't look like the 'shortened' version I had imagined (lets say the name was Samuel - I liked Sammy) and I ended up calling him the long version. Seven years later this has evolved into us both using 'Samuel' and 'Sam' and every pet name in between the two.

The way I see it is by the time he is 13/14 he'll have picked the version he likes best (or something else entirely) and won't care what we call him as long as we don't do it in front of his mates! And we have the satisfaction of having agreed on a name (...sort of).

Meant to say that I loved Malachi too - but DH hated the idea of him being called Mal.

Well I woke up in the night realising that I have 2 cousins called James (not sure why it hadn't clicked before!) so think going to have to forget that name as would cause family issues annoying as DP had actually agreed he liked it!!

Do still like Tobias with nn Toby, and I like Adam but DP doesn't. Way too many of the names have been 'taken' by relatives/close friends, so difficult!

How about Cody as sort of similar to Toby?

Or...

Jaden / Hayden
Corey
Dexter
Louis
Mason
Nile
Reece

What other names do u like but dp doesnt like? And do u prefer traditional / modern names?

Anste · 25/08/2009 21:20

Guy

Ponders · 25/08/2009 21:22

What about Theo or Leo - 2 syllables already and you'd struggle to shorten either of them further!

boogeek · 25/08/2009 21:22

Patrick, nn Paddy (because Pat is just vile)?
