What's the consensus on Roma (for a girl)?

This is the name of a friend's baby girl and I to and fro over whether I think it is lovely and the right kind of usual (the 'wrong' kind being the silly type, Princess Tiiaammi anyone?) or just reminds me too much of, well, Italy.
Opinions please!

I went to school with a Roma. She was a right cow, but the name is nice.

florence2511 · 21/08/2009 18:44

I think it's a lovely name. Unusual without being stupid.

I knew a Roma a few years back - lovely lady. Probably why I love the name so much.

I aso think Romy is nice, possible nicer that Roma.

confuseddoiordonti · 21/08/2009 18:47

Oooh, Romy - yes, I agree. Both are the right side of unusual I think. I do like something away from the norm, but think it can also easily err on the side of naff.
Another friend called her firstborn Tyler. I think that is, frankly, hideous and it has never grown on me.

not for the Northern Irish

CountessDracula · 21/08/2009 18:48

Romy much nicer I agree

MaggieBeauLeo · 21/08/2009 18:48

I really like Romy. I'd be quite crusty and put Rosemary (not to everybody's taste I know but I like it) on the bc and nick name her Romy.

Roma makes me think of Roma gypsies. I'm not saying that's bad. But that's what pops into my head.

confuseddoiordonti · 21/08/2009 18:53

Maggie, I can see where you're coming from. I also have a long lead for my dog which I called the 'roamer' lead and it can kind of put me in mind of that. However, I think I 80% like it, and it's nice that there aren't a lot of Roma's about!

Ronaldinhio - why not for the Northern Irish? Am confused!

Roma makes me think of the football team. As will a lot of men/boys.

confuseddoiordonti · 21/08/2009 18:58

Ah, the man who is the father of this little girl barely know's what football is! He is African and she is Chinese so was very curious to what they'd choose, boy or girl. I would have never have guessed Roma!

i like romilly

piprabbit · 21/08/2009 19:00

Roma is a furry alien in the Hoobs....

Sorry - first thong that popped into my head

confuseddoiordonti · 21/08/2009 19:04

Oooh! Amazing what different names conjure up for different people!

Oops - thing obviously (not underwear obsessed in anyway).

scottishmummy · 21/08/2009 19:06

roma perfume

MaggieBeauLeo · 21/08/2009 20:41

Roma gypsies had to hide in a church to avoid being verbally and physically abused by the lowest rung of the food chain in NI.

hester · 21/08/2009 20:44

I know a middle-aged Roma. I think it's pretty.

MmeLindt · 21/08/2009 20:47

I prefer Romy.

Roma makes me think of Brooklyn Beckham, being named after the place that you were concieved. A bit silly.

Just as well we did not do that or our DS would have been called Hanover

Its nice but always reminds me of a very annoying horse and carriage driver (male) we came across in Egypt once with this name!

allaboutme · 21/08/2009 20:50

MY DS would have been called Tottenham in that case

I love Romy and like Romilly. Not too sure about Roma though. Seems a bit harsher somehow

MaggieBeauLeo · 21/08/2009 20:53

You're all so exciting. I'd have two kids both called mybedathome.

confuseddoiordonti · 21/08/2009 21:07

better than carparkstairwell I suppose!

  • Not that any of my DC's could be called that either, I want to emphasise!

Hi there, my little girl is called Roma and everyone comments on how lovely it is and n o-one else is called that so at the moment the only one in her school - she loves her name as well!

stickylittlefingers · 21/08/2009 23:07

I like it -perhaps a bit on the pretentious side but I don't really have a problem with that.

mathanxiety · 22/08/2009 03:37

Roma Downey -- actress from NI. I think the name is not that unusual in Ireland.
