What is the mn verdict?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It's very very popular (1-2 in most yrs at our school, and muddled in my head with Ella, Ellie and Amelia) but, well, for a reason - it's a nice name (they all are).

Everyone can say it and spell it. It's fine.

I wouldn't pick it as the one thing I like about my own name is that it's unusual (so when I call people I am the only Clary they know).

I think it is a bit boring, but obviously it is also fairly classic and timeless as it has certainly been around as a popular name for a very long time (ranked in the top 25 since 1980). Perfectly nice, just not very exciting. Of course it may just seem dull because it is so popular.

I think if you like the sound of it then go for it. IME children don't mind at all to have a popular name.

lljkk · 18/08/2009 08:02

Dull but not popular, I barely known any (one age 35 and one age 1yo, that's it!!).
So I'd say go for it.
I have 2 DC with quite dull names (well, 3, according to some MNers), including an Isobel, and you don't get more overdone than Isobel.
At least everyone knows how to pronounce and spell the "dull" names!
My Other DC has an unusual name that excites all sorts of negative comments AND ppl mispell and mis-say it, poor guy, he deserved better.

I love it and it has special meaning for me, so maybe that's why

Another spelling may be an alternative. Here (I live in Sweden), it is spelled Emelie, which I think is very pretty.

dizzydixies · 18/08/2009 08:21

there is a reason its popular - its a lovely name

I do know loads though so if that bothers you don't use it

we have an Isabella known as Ella and everyone days it is SO overused - we only know one other and she is Izzy - don't let what others say put your off a name

SleepWhenImDead · 18/08/2009 09:04

overly popular, think it shows a bit of lack of originality, sorry.

SoWhat · 18/08/2009 09:11

Love it. One of my choices if I have another DD.

littlemisslozza · 18/08/2009 09:21

I think it's a beautiful name but too popular. I'm a teacher and one of my classes had FOUR Emilys and 3 Rebeccas!!!! Trouble is, you never quite know how popular it really is until they go to school.

At dd's summer camp there were four Emily's in her group (of about 30 kids). They were known as Emily1, Emily2 etc. It was a little science fiction when dd was telling me that "Emily4" was her bf. She thought that the idea was very interesting, and decided she would be "Emily56001"

magbags · 19/08/2009 17:18

Just ok for me. I prefer Emma and Elodie is lovely.

simplesusan · 20/08/2009 11:39

I think if you like it then go for it. Don't try and be different by using a varient as like others have said at least everyone can say and spell Emily.

FimbleHobbs · 20/08/2009 12:03

I love it - DD is called Emily and we only know one other, so although its popular it hasn't been an issue for us.

We call her Milly for short but I think its nice for her to have a 'formal' name as well for when she grows up to rule the world.

Funnily enough I'm not that keen on the Amelia/ Emmilie type of variations, I just like the classic English spelling.

Meeely3 · 20/08/2009 13:21

I'm a 33 year old Emily - so timeless classic of course!

sophieandbelly · 20/08/2009 14:25
