What do you think of Osian as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Quite cool actually... doesn't have any particular connotations for me anyway. Could be a bit try-hard...?

BitOfFun · 14/08/2009 18:45

Puts me in mind of Osama actually, sorry...

ohnelly · 14/08/2009 18:45

Its Welsh by the way!

A very close relative of mine is called Oisin - it's Irish. Getting more popular.

thehouseofmirth · 14/08/2009 18:54

Love it! It's DS1's middle name and I wish we'd been brave enough to use it as his first name as we'd originally intended.

MaggieBelleVirgo · 14/08/2009 18:57

Is this the Welsh version of the Irish Oisin.

I suppose it's what you're used to, but it sounds a bit weird to me. Makes me understand how Oisin might seem to somebody who wasn't familiar with it.

Firawla · 14/08/2009 18:58

Not come across it before (only Oisin) but it seems nice

Ondine · 14/08/2009 19:34

I prefer Oisin, which I love. But if you're Welsh then I would understand using Osian which is also nice.

LetThemEatCake · 15/08/2009 10:42

I like it. I know an Oisin. It's definitely a name you have to hear if you;re not familiar with it ... the first times you see it written it's like "eh?? what?"

bronzethinksthedmarearses · 15/08/2009 10:44

Its from Welsh mythology My daughters named after Osians love.

thatsnotmybelly · 15/08/2009 10:47

How do you pronounce it?

And how do you pronounce Oisin?

LetThemEatCake · 15/08/2009 11:23

Like Osh-in

thatsnotmybelly · 15/08/2009 11:28

Are they both pronounced the same?

bellissima · 15/08/2009 12:03

Oisin sounds nice. Osian sounds like part of the Caucasus/Georgia etc that is always being fought over.

Ondine · 15/08/2009 12:07

These are good sites for hearing how Irish and Welsh names are pronounced; Oisín and Osian.

KnickKnack · 15/08/2009 12:12

The irish Oisin is pronounced osh-een (I'm irish and know a few Oisins)

pinkthechaffinch · 15/08/2009 13:05

reminds me of bones 'os' meaning bone in French

Flamesparrow · 15/08/2009 13:12

I like Osian.

DH vetoed.

Grrr.

limonchik · 15/08/2009 13:13

I think Oisin is "osh een" (or ush een) and Osian is more like "osh an".

ohnelly · 15/08/2009 18:59

yes Osian is pronounced osh an in Wales. Thanks for your input everyone

mathanxiety · 15/08/2009 19:42

It's a bit too like Ocean, imo.

DreamsInBinary · 15/08/2009 20:38

Love Osian - was on short-list but dc2 was a girl

Def Osh-an

TiggyR · 15/08/2009 21:05

I like Oisin as in Osh-een, with a soft O, but if Osian is pron. Oh - shian, then it's a bit too much like Ocean, which is a made-up downmarket 'C' word name - sorry. (though it's better for a boy than a girl, esp. if you can argue that it's a proper Welsh name)

DreamsInBinary · 15/08/2009 21:48

Ah, now I get the Ocean thing. It's not pronounced Oh-shan, as it's a short 'O', like in otter.

Chunkamatic · 15/08/2009 22:51

I've never come across the Welsh version before, but after practising saying it a few times.. I really reaaly like it! Might have to do alot of correcting/name spelling to ingnoramus's but there are alot of names like that!
