A name for our baby boy to be.. The First Shortlist!

So dh and I are both Irish and living in the UK.. We'd like a name that's a bit 'Celtic' but not unpronounceable.

Here's our list so far:
Brendan
Declan
Finbar
Oran (ok, ok, you won't know how to pronounce it but it's oh-run with the stress on the oh)
Liam
and.. (not particularly Irish)
Tom

Our surname is O'Neill, if that helps! So apart from Tom, keen on the 2-syllables.

Anyone who has any other suggestions, please wade in!

Brendan - like it
Declan - like it, bit dated
Finbar -like it.

Oran - no, no, no, too like the sin of onan, ffs, WHAT are you thinking of?!!?

Liam - like it

Tom - like it.

ha ha, that is the least helpful analysis of a name list I've ever given.

Brendan is the best.

Lorcan is very of the moment in Ireland right now. But I do really like it. I like Diarmuid which I think is reasonably easy in England.

Be daring, go with Seamus. All the cool people in Dublin seem to have a Seamus under 2. It's Ireland's version of urbane urban chic.

TOK · 13/08/2009 22:19

Somebody previously mentioned Evan- it is also an Irish name- Eimhin. We chose this for our ds, but spell it Evin as he would forever have to correct people otherwise! We also have an O' surname and I think it would sound lovely with yours too- Evin O'Neill. (I may be slightly biased though)xxx

OmegaMummy · 13/08/2009 22:26

FWIW
With an O'XXXX as my maiden name and my two boys middle name, we went with Christy (Christopher for being told off) and Brendan. At school - always a factor to consider - we have out of 630 children - one other Christy and no other Brendan ....

Doobydoo · 13/08/2009 22:32

Oisin[?sp]
Like all your names
I have a Finn and a Milo

mrsbean78 · 13/08/2009 22:50

Dooby Doo love Milo, but not with O'Neill! Great name, though1

MaggieBelleVirgo What is this sin of onan business? Sounds nasty but a new one on me! No way with the Seamus. Dh had a 'friend' called Seamus once (an Irish dancing schoolteacher) who spent a good deal of our
early relationship (when we were 19 and 20 respectively) trying to convince dh that he'd be better off with some mutual friend of theirs from school that fancied him, most of the time doing so in front of me. Old and whinging before his time - my God, what could dh be thinking seeing someone from outside the county boundaries! Shock! Horror! When you could inbreed instead?! So not at all daring or outre for me!

screamingabdab Now Spike, there's something daring . Thing is, the world and his mother know that we've spent half this pregnancy indulging in the guilty delights that are Buffy and Angel boxsets - and I already have a friend with a little girl called Willow.. so am thinking I shall have to forgo the pleasure or end up naming the next one Balthasar or Kakistos or some other demon-from-Sunnydale name! Funny, but not cool.

Every Irishman I have every come across have been called Kevin for some reason.

Anyway back to the debate

Tom O'Neill sounds great.

Harimosmummy · 13/08/2009 23:02

Finbar is the name of my teddy, so not a fave for a little boy for me.

Agree with others - Oran O'Neill is very cool.

screamingabdab · 14/08/2009 01:08

mrsbean All you'd say is "I don't know what you're talking about , it's after Spike Lee"

TDK 'Twas me who mentioned Evan. Evan is my son's name , we chose it as it's the Welsh variant of John

screamingabdab · 14/08/2009 01:11

Oh, I also like Asa. I have no idea where it comes from, but Asa O'Neill is good.

clairebearx · 14/08/2009 03:33

Brady
Cassidy
Darcy
Keenan
Lochlann(my personal favourite)
Malachy (another fave)
Regan
Sheridan
Teague
Tiernan
Tomas(irish form of Thomas)
Toran

Hope this list helps some..i think Declan is the nicest name on your list.

Have fun x

mathanxiety · 14/08/2009 04:46

Declan has been overdone, very associated with the northside of Dublin (Anto and Decco = tosser names) ..Lorcan is fine to my ears. Finbar likewise. Liam not with a ten foot pole (too many Liams). I like Brendan. Now Oran, come to think of it, might get your son into trouble (Oran--Oral....) Would you considered Aran instead? How about Colm/Callum/Colum? How about Daithi (Dah-he)? (Irish rendition of David).

TiggyR · 14/08/2009 10:14

Hate Liam - very downmarket choice in England, and over-used. I love Lorcan but if you can't get past the local connotations (funny how those vary so much from area to area!) then perhaps Lachlan?

Declan's not bad, don't really like Oran, sounds a bit....like a pharmaceutical!
I had Malchy and Seamus on my list 10 years ago - never used either in the end.

TiggyR · 14/08/2009 10:14

Sorry - that would be Malachy obviously!

tracedw · 14/08/2009 11:06

M DH is irish and we live in England, our 3 boys are Oscar
Tadhg
Conan

Oisin
Rory/Rhairdh
Eugene
Cormac
Dara/Daragh
Columba
I loved Lorcan as well but my DH would not entertain the idea at all, always said something about "lurking" , i think it`s a Dublin thing.

pointydog · 14/08/2009 15:29

Cormac is nice

BlueChampagne · 14/08/2009 16:22

I have an Aidan but also like Brendan. Think Devlin is pretty cool too.

jkklpu · 14/08/2009 22:43

Finbar(r) is my fave from your list
also love Eamonn and Ciaran

TheDMHatesMe · 14/08/2009 22:57

Lovely names!

Brendan - yes
Declan - yes yes reminds me of sexy Declan O'Hara from Jilly Cooper's Rivals
Finbar - yes
Oran - no, sorry, and I think everyone would misprounounce
Liam - bit boring, sorry
Tom - classic

What about Emmet? I think this is a great name.

I also like Cormac and Colm.

LadyMetroland · 15/08/2009 10:08

From your list I like Tom best. Even if it is a bit popular, it's a great name.

What about Kieran / Ciaran? I'd choose that if I was Irish
