do you think it's cruel...

...to call a child Elijah? What does it say to you - "unusual but nice", "pretentious" or "very very unfortunate"? Does Elijah Wood make it acceptable these days?

It's one of those names I really like in theory (strong, manly, the kind of name you say with feeling in a deep voice), but am not sure about in practice!

Also, can you think of anything nice it could be shortened to?

I love it and absolutely adore 'Eli'. it was my #1 choice but my OH hated it I know two little boys called Eli (one just plain Eli, the other short for Elijah, both adorable) so it's not as unusual as it might have been a few years back.

jellybeans · 13/08/2009 17:51

i LIKE IT.

screamingabdab · 13/08/2009 17:53

I really like it.

Elijah is the only name that there are 2 of in dd's class! A class of 11 children.

It's not an odd name and just 'becomes the child' and just another name when you're used to saying it all the time iyswim.

weaselbudge · 13/08/2009 19:08

I really like Elijah if shortened to Eli - sounds a weeny bit pretentious if use the full name all the time (as do all boys names with three syllables). I predict that Elijah will be the new "Noah".

KIMItheThreadSlayer · 13/08/2009 19:12

It is a beautiful name, I love it

nickytwotimes · 13/08/2009 19:14

Lovely name.
Seems pretty 'normal' to me.
I don't know any, but it is a familiar name and not at all cruel or unusual or strange.

Tidey · 13/08/2009 19:16

Love it.

tummytickler · 13/08/2009 23:11

Oh no, my Elijah is nearly 7 - i dont want it to me the new Noah - i am so bored of Noah!

pointydog · 13/08/2009 23:23

I don't like Elijah at all.

seaturtle · 13/08/2009 23:29

Love it. There's a little boy in DD1's year 5 class called this. It's a fairly mixed school (i.e. not posh) and it's just treated as any other name. He isn't teased about it or anything.

It's a great name.

Tortington · 13/08/2009 23:34

i love it

clairebearx · 14/08/2009 03:44

I'm not religious at all, but love a lot of boys biblical names and Elijah (Eli too) is one of my favourites..unusual in the North east of england but so what..There is a solomon in my DS class (who sometimes gets Sol) and he doesn't get picked on for having an unusual name.

Verity79 · 14/08/2009 10:49

I love Elijah but it is too popular for me to use around here (plus it's DD3 on the way ). I wouldn't use the Eli nickname I would shorten it to Lije. One of my favourite books (Isaac Asimov's The Caves of Steel) has a character called Elijah (Lije) Baley. His wife is called Jezabel (Jessie)!

MaElsie · 17/08/2009 13:37

Ah thanks, generally a good consensus. My DH will be pleased (although not sure my parents will be!). Found a great middle name to go with it too, so all set for a boy. Now just a girl's name to decide....

I know an Elijah and everyone was a bit surprised at first as he is about 16 now. Her other ds has a very "way out name" though, including one of several middle names that is normally used for girls . His full name is Elijah Blue and when he was little it did cause a lot of smiles when his mum shouted out across the street to him.
