I think it's a bit slebby. loads of slebs seem to name their child harper and then rant on about how much they loved the book. OK you loved the book! but can't you just love the book, and then pick a nice name?!

Scout is another example of this. ffs!

MaggieBelleVirgo · 09/08/2009 22:23

and no matter how erudite you are, there's always the risk that the person you're about to meet 'has a better hand', so keep your cards hidden

LetThemEatCake · 09/08/2009 22:29

I know 2 Harpers. 1 male, 1 female

Atticus - everyone's favourite novel at the moment. Very on trend.

Magnus - nope

Seamus - not keen on this

MamaLazarou · 10/08/2009 09:18

I love Atticus. I hadn't realised how popular it was becoming until I came to MN - glad I did.

GrendelsMum · 10/08/2009 11:51

Atticus is great - definitely go with that.

minouminou · 10/08/2009 13:51

Loving Magnus and Atticus, Seamus wears a ratty old jumper and wellies that smell of seawater and fish.

posieparkerinChina · 10/08/2009 13:53

I love the name Atticus.

sleeplessinstretford · 10/08/2009 14:12

atticus-no,too obvious where it came from i guess (although Jem is nice!)
Magnus-not unless you are scandiwegian
Seamus is the hypothetical boy i will one day give birth to and was dd2's boys name,if it helps we all have irish heritage-if you don't then it's a bit meh

I used to live in Attica and that is what Atticus makes me think of.

Magnus - Magna Carta

But I like Seamus!

Platesmasher · 10/08/2009 19:26

Have you considered Artemus or Artemas.

I'm thinking it sounds like a combination of all of your favourite names. But it's a real name of course.

EachPeachPearMum · 10/08/2009 19:30

minouminou- I love your description of Seamus now isn't he a fellow you'd love to meet on holiday, who'd sell you fresh crabs from his boat, and gently tease your children about how much they've grown since they visited last year?

TwoIfBySea · 10/08/2009 19:34

Seamus always makes me think of a little old man wearing tweed.

Atticus and Magnus are both very strong names but it depends on the surname I suppose.

Platesmasher · 10/08/2009 23:07

Have absolutely decided that your child should be Artemus.

KleineMaus · 10/08/2009 23:14

Ooh, ooh, ooh! Go for Magnus, it's top of my list. Nobody else in real life seems to like it, but anytime I see it (I'm working on a book that involves lots of Orcadian/Scandinavian history so I keep coming upon it) my heart goes ping! I don't know why I like it so much, but I can't get it out of my head.

Seamus I quite like and Atticus I really don't I'm afraid.

LetThemEatCake · 10/08/2009 23:26

no child of mine will be called Artemus. But thank you. I think.

ouch

LetThemEatCake · 11/08/2009 00:01

pay me no mind. The name I would really truly like to give to this dc, if a boy, is Aslan. I just love it. But have been shouted down too many times.

Platesmasher · 11/08/2009 00:33

I like it too, but is making me think of a lion. why is that? lion, witch, wardrobe?

LetThemEatCake · 11/08/2009 07:49

yes , it's the lion in the Narnia books. But also a Turkish name. Meaning 'lion'

I might go for Magnus Leon

My baby is called Artemus, a fabulous name in my book. An exceptionally gorgeous little boy... and everyone likes his name. All of my children have unusual names and so I a used to people not always liking a name, but it's not usual as I have impeccable taste, apparently.

LetThemEatCake · 11/08/2009 15:52

oh me too, posie - my 2 have unusual names and I get, um, negative reactions all the time. No offence about Artemus. I am sure he is exceptionally gorgeous

LadyOfTheFlowers · 11/08/2009 15:56

my eldest is called shay, which is obv. derived (??) from seamus.

Stokey · 13/08/2009 18:07

I like Magnus - is on my list as like old names but dh says its too Scandinavian

definitely prefer to Atticus or Seamus
