Tierney?

I absolutely love this name for a girl, but I'm unsure on the spelling. I'm not keen on the 'er' part as I don't think it looks very nice on paper and could lead to people emphasising that part and saying tee-ERNIE which I really don't like.

I was considering spelling it Tianey, with Tia as a nn, and I've also seen it spelt Tianie, but I'm a bit unsure as I've heard it can be a boys' name? I spotted it on a baby name website as a girls' name though.

Any opinons, suggestions or advice appreciated!

I know one who is a boy, and is American. Personally I find it a mouthful.

I do also like Tia on it's own but I was after something a bit more unusual, and I just can't get this name out of my head as I love the sound of it.

I'm a bit obsessed with spelling because my own name is ALWAYS mispronounced so I want to make sure it's obvious from the spelling how to say it.

It remind me of Maura Tierney who played Abby in ER, and she was always a little moody! I dont like it as a first name, sorry, mainly because it also reminds me of Gurney.

I went to school with kids from a family with that surname.

In my head, I'm already saying "teeny tiny tierney" or "teary tierney". Amazing how those things from school lurk in your subconscious!

Tia is infinitely better imo.

Not keen on Tahnee or Tawnie (sorry) but I do quite like Tiana/Tianna. I think if I went down the -anna route I'd choose Deanna over Tianna though, which is also on the list.

I don't think it's a boy's or girl's name, it's just a surname (Irish).

How about Peony instead? Same kind of sound, and more feminine. I know a little girl named this!

Tiana is pronounced Tee-arna as opposed to Tee-anna like Deanna.

Or how about Christiana and Tiana for short?

That's something to think about as I was going to use Christina/Kristina as a middle name after my mum, but a variation as a first name isn't a bad idea. Thanks

Just had another thought- it didn't come to me at first but Christiana sounds like Christiano, as in Ronaldo, which puts me off a bit...

christiana is lovely, tierney is an irish surname and not that nice.

lol stleger. i mean no harm to anyone whose surname is tierney, it's just not one that you'd automatically think would make a good first name. mind you, on balance i think that's my objection, i'm not a fan of the surname/forename thing.
